My shipment arrived! Let's unbox this thing! [You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.]The Przewalski's horse! Comparing to CollectA's and Schleich's (which I repainted to represent a different type of horse when it started to get a little too scuffed and worn). I still think Schleich's is the best sculpt and paint job, with Safari's coming in second. Safari's is a bit too chunky and childish in comparison. Still better than CollectA's though (which generally isn't hard). Caribou! It's nice, but much more chunky and childish than the previous reindeer figure, kinda' like the Przewalski's horse. I wish the quality of Safari's sculpting was more even. Sometimes the animals are beautiful models and sometimes they're kiddie toys. Nevertheless, they're still my favourite company out there. Lynx! Raven! And the one I've been waiting for... the American Mastodon!! Comparing the (very angry looking) mastodon with the Carnegie and Wild Safari woolly mammoths. I like this mastodon... It's a fantastically sculpted animal at a really good size. Safari delivered on the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] prehistoric animal I wanted. And now the whole gang together! I also added the CollectA river otter and pacific white-sided dolphin to my collection as well. |

[You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.] Hello and welcome to my Canidae collection <3 I think you are all aware that I [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], but my favourite animals are actually wolves. I find these creatures so mysterious, so beautiful. I love their behaviour and appearance. I cannot stop looking at them! And they come in all sizes and colours! Once they were native to my country, but unfortunately they were hunted down and got extinct here. But since a few years, they are trying to find their way back. If my country is big and wild enough for those beautiful animals I do not know, but it would be a dream to see a wild individual here once. But wolves are not the only canids that I like! I like all wild canids, so foxes and wild dogs included. There are so many wild canids to collect and so little money to spend, but I try hard to get as many as I can! Please enjoy my Canidae collection! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gray Wolf AAA

Review of the complete set of Ants and Termites by Club Earth. WOW, I only recently found out about this set (again, courtesy of Froggie). What a remarkable group of critters to specialize in for a set, and the name is somewhat misleading because there is also the only known figure of a member of the order Zoraptera (6, below)!!!!! Ants and termites are behaviorally similar but not at all related, and termites have recently been sunk into the cockroaches. The zorapterans appear to be at least nestled among the orthopteroids and are more-closely related to the termites than the ants. The figures are comparable in size with PV, K&M, and other Club Earth figures, and larger and more solid than most bin-style sets. Most are obviously unique, as termite figures are rare and how often do we get species or even genus designations for ant figures?!?! The common names below are what is stamped on the figure; the Latin names are of my choosing. The set seems to be focused on North America, so that made it somewhat easier to assign genera and sometimes species. 1. big-headed ant, Pheidole megacephala. This is my second figure of this genus, as a big-headed ant was included in the World of Nature Insect Collection by Funrise Toys (http://animaltoyforum.com/index.php?topic=1621.0). image hosting free no registration 2. Texas shed-builder ant, Crematogaster lineolata. Not much to add since it’s apparently a unique species and a cool little figure. image hosting free no registration 3. arid-lands honey ant, Myrmecocystus sp. There are enough ‘honey pot’ ants that I could not assign an exact species. They chose to make a winged version, which is too bad. I think a honey-engorged replete would have been more fun! image hosting free no registration 4. Pacific Coast termite, Zootermopsis angusticollis. One of two termites in the set, this one represents a really nice soldier!!! My only other soldier termites are by Wicked Cool Toys (Wild Kraats) and an unknown manufacturer. Funrise Toys did a ‘king termite’ (see link above under #1). image hosting free no registration 5. Texas carpenter ant, Camponotus texanus. Many carpenter ants are fairly uniform in appearance, at least to us non-specialists, so I based the Latin name on the common name. I have a large carpenter ant figure by K&M and a queen and three workers of C. japonicus by Epoch. image hosting free no registration 6. zorapteran, Zorotypus sp. Here we go, the crown jewel, the ONLY (to my knowledge) figure of Zoraptera. If North American, like everything else in this set, the figure probably represents Z. hubbardi. image hosting free no registration 7. subterranean termite, Reticulitermes sp. A winged figure, and too generic to go beyond genus. But a neat addition to this set! image hosting free no registration 8. leaf-cutter ant, Acromyrmex sp. Like the honey pot ants, there are too many species of leaf-cutter ants to go further with the ID. Surprisingly, no other (known to me) figures of this group. image hosting free no registration |

Review of the complete set of Bugs n' Jug by the Imperial Toy Corporation (Imperial Toys, as it's often referred to on this forum) from 1990. The set consists of 12 beetle figures, a pamphlet, plastic forceps, a small magnifying glass, and a small mesh insect net, and the whole set came in a plastic jar. The set was clearly designed to introduce children to insects and promote insect collection! The figures are on average about 30 mm long and a slightly soft rubber/plastic, characteristic of many vintage figures. Some represent interesting and bizarre families; half I still cannot confidently place. I have been holding off posting this until I could confidently identify everything but finally decided to post them, in hopes maybe someone can recognize some. I have 'knock-off' figures of a few of these, although I am not sure who came first (I do not know how 'original' Imperial Toys tended to be...). Each figure is marked on the underside with their vintage 'crown' stamp but no name, common or scientific. Group shot with pamphlet: photo uploading Individual beetles, the 'known' species to families followed by the unknowns: 1. Wedge-shaped beetle, family Ripiphoridae. This is a neat one, and to my knowledge the only member of this family in toy form (not including potential knock-offs--I think I have seen one on eBay). photo uploading 2. Stag beetle, family Lucanidae. Nothing exciting and probably too generic to ID further... photo uploading 3. Click beetle, family Elateridae. This figure actually has a prosternal process sculpted on the underside, solidifying its placement in Elateridae (my specialty group!). I also have a lavender-colored knock-off of this guy. photo uploading 4. Tumbling flower beetle, family Mordellidae. Like the ripiphorid above, another unique one at the family level! photo uploading 5. Primitive weevil, family Brentidae. I have a few of these in various sizes but all influenced from one another. I have yet to hunt down the genus or species but it looks familiar... photo uploading 6. Giraffe weevil, Trachelophorus giraffa, family Attelabidae. This figure is identifiable by its shape, but it really should be red instead of green. The only figure in the set I can currently identify to the species level. photo uploading 7. Unknown #1. The shape suggests Chrysomelidae but the mandibles are unusual...(Histeridae?) photo uploading 8. Unknown #2. I am pretty sure this is a flea beetle (Chrysomelidae: Alticini). In the U.S. one might consider the genus Orthaltica! photo uploading 9. Unknown #3. This is most-certainly a fungus beetle of some kind, probably in the family Erotylidae or Endomychidae (maybe a glorified Tritoma?). photo uploading 10. Unknown #4. Another possible chrysomelid? Very generic; the form is actually dytiscid-like but the antennae are awfully long. photo uploading 11. Unknown #5. I have seen this general morphotype a few times in toy form. I always considered them checkered beetles (Cleridae), but who can say? photo uploading 12. Unknown #6. This one strikes me as a possible member of Tenebrionidae. Maybe a glorified Bolitophagus? photo uploading |

So, I am taking advantage of having more time on the weekends and selecting some of the bigger and busier taxa, so now and then I'll put the random number generator aside and tackle a specific group. First up is the genus Coccinella as well as ALL of my lady beetles that are not attributable to a species or genus. Other lady beetle figures attributable to other genera and species will have their own posts at the genus-level. I. Coccinella hasegawai. - And today a very rare ceratopsian in toy shape. The new Einiosaurus!
Thanks for showing us this one! He's even better looking than I imagined! This is definitely [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on my list for Safari figures. You're right that Collecta will undoubtedly release some excellent dinosaurs as well, so it may just be the Einiosaur that interests me for now. I love the Diplodocus too, especially the unique sea green coloration. I actually like the CollectA Deinocheirus much better than this one, but that's simply due to personal preference. Both are great figures in their own right and accurately depict the animal. |

Wow, if macaw is nunmber 1, the Rainforest puzzle is not correct yet. We only knew the 1996 version from parrots bulk that is marked [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Okapi and orangutan numbers match those we obtained. [You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.] It means I need more numbers. [You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.] Mandrill we have on TAI is [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] but it is the version from Monkeys bulk that is also from 1998. So, I suppose yours is marked [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]? 3 is leopard, 4 boa and 6 civet. [You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.] These numbers helped us a lot to organize all bulks missing on 1998 catalogue, but, to do it correctly, we also needed to know the numbers of those in catalogue. I may ask you some more further if you don't mind. Thanks also for your words but I am not as knowledgeable, I am just very dedicated and witht he help of several of you, we're building TAI that turns anyone in an expert. I should write phrog instead. Yes, the species apparently is not interesting for you once it is a harbor seal as you can see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] :) Thank you, i think as pacific common seal it could be a interesting subspecie :) |

Roger, sorry for the delay, but my PV cheetah is marked [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] indeed!
I don't have a lot additions to show you, but I absolutely adore the ones I do have to show! First of all, some PV figurines I got with trades from Lance: Play Visions 1998 hooded seal, 1998 striped hog-nosed skunk, 1996 red fox and 1996 raccoon dog
And this one I completely forgot to photograph earlier. I was happily shocked when I found it second hand at my local Schleich-S/Papo shop and of course couldn't leave it there, for I was searching for it for years: Schleich-S 75 Anniversary Book
And lastly, a wonderful package from Roger arrived!! [You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.] Science & Nature kakapo, Play Visions 1996 yellow-crested cockatoo and Happy Kin Toys Deep Sea Set with manatee (!!!) and starfish
Lance and Roger, thanks again for the wonderful figurines [You must be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to see this image.] Oooh and it feels so great to have a new manatee for my collection again |

My enormous BULK of Mini plastic animals. Many kinds, like jungle animals, farm animals, ocean animals, domestic pets, prehistoric, the list can go on. I've been looking for this information as well. The list of species is not the same as the Mech/Panini set, although there is definitely strong overlap and some of the molds are very similar or identical. I have the whole set of either Mech or Panini (I'm not actually sure how to tell the difference), and the numbering doesn't match. Polacanthus, for example, is not [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], it's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. The Play Visions set also includes some new species. Mech/Panini didn't include Ouranosaurus or Pachycephalosaurus, for example. For what it's worth, here is the numbering for the set I have: 1. Corythosaurus 2. Ankylosaurus 3. Pteranodon 4. Tyrannosaurus 5. Stegosaurus 6. Camptosaurus 7. Iguanodon 8. Brontosaurus 9. Protoceratops 10. Triceratops 11. Parasaurolophus 12. Dimetrodon 13. Elasmosaurus 14. Tylosaurus 15. Ichthyosaurus 16. Palaeoscincus 17. Polacanthus 18. Smilodon 19. Coelodonta 20. Cynognathus 21. Mammuthus 22. Moropus 23. Diatryma 24. Brachiosaurus The only other information I can offer on the PV set is that it also includes a Cynognathus, because I've been looking for one for a while. I don't know its number, unfortunately. |
