This is the first series of - I think - 6  "Neargo Collection" cats . Neargo is a fantasy island, as shown on the outer box, and the cats have owners in the village there

The set has item no 16420, and each cat has a number from 1 to 12  
As far as I can see, there is a Japanese Curl, a Turkish Van, a Bengal, a Siamese, a Persian, a Japanese Bobtail cross, and a Birma.
There surely are "Housecats" too, but I am sure we can idetify more breeds in some of the others    

You're right, there are 6 series and yours is volume 1 from 2003.
They have names, back row from left:

Rally, Lapan, Pinky, Moss, Milk, Dalia (hamster's owner)

Front row from left:
Audrey, 2nd was sleeping and haven't told me, Morve, Meow, Kate and Crawl

They have some color variations, from Pinky I have found not less than 3!
I think to be listed on TAI you'll have to use their names and later we link them to their respective breeds, unless those that breed is identifiable.

Yes, and that is easy, - each one has an identity card, for instenace here is the one of no 1 , Kate , who loves strawberries
One page is fortunately in English, but the other is in - I think - Japanese , or is it chinese ???

It sounds like Chinese to me but I am almost sure it is Japanese.
So my research work was useless, they have beautiful identity cards with tail and all. Only breed is missing, it seems.

I'm really so glad that you have bought this set!
This is really a very unusual set! The cats are beautiful, especially that fat black and white cat.
Also these cards! Absolutely a special treasure for a very special person!

Last week I was careless enough to take a look at Sandspielfiguren's site...and found some completey irresistable models as so often before

- The cheetah from Schleich Bayala Arelan 70442 set.
- From Bullyland some of the old cows that I didn't have, a cactus with flowers, a white tiger and the wonderful, funny Basilisk  
- Two of the beautyful animal/human Egyption gods made by Plastoy
- An alligator trainer from a Safari-toob  

Now I have four of the lovely Plastoy Egyptian gods : Bastet, Thoth, Anubis and Horus

The alligator trainer is from Safari toob "Alligators alive", but this model was taken out in 2013, so it was only sold for 4 years
