| I thought that I made all the felidae species, but I have just discovered it was one left: The southern tigrina (Leopardus guttulus). It is found in southern and southeastern Brazil, and was recognized to be a distinct species in 2013. It was formerly considered to belong to the species L. tigrinus (oncilla). The small neotropical cat has a yellowish-ocre coat patterned with open black rossettes. Physically, the southern tigrina can be distinguished from the oncilla by its slightly darker background coloring, larger rosette pattern, and slightly shorter tail. However, it is extremely difficult to distinguish between the two species by appearance alone, since more genetic variation tends to occur within each species than between the two species...further research is being conducted throughout South America to better understand the special differences between oncillas and southern tigrinas. So, now I have to make another small cat... Perhaps this picture helps: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]More information here

| I also had no idea it was elevated to species level. These small cats are really ahrd to differenciate. Though, I think it is fantastic that you have a new member to work! |

| This one is not painted in fact, it is another "Sculpinture", getting color by adding small balls of colored polymer clay... |

| Well done, Mgarat! I have really enjoyed watching your Felidae project come to completion.
I have used a similar coloring technique on polymer clay sculptures, even using caning or millefiori to create repeating patterns for clothing. I think it might be a useful technique for spotted cats as well. _________________ Nathan Parker

| Recognizing that "sculpainting" was a good experience, I have retaken the traditional way to make a model of a Southern tigrina made in the same way than the other fellow of the Felidae Family. Simultaneously I also made a new Oncilla, Trying to highlight the differences and similitudes between these to little wild cats. So, after a lot of work, let me introduce you the new member of the FFP: The "official" Souther Tigrina (Leopardus Guttulus): [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |
