| Thank you, Roger, Susanne, Lucky Luke, Andreas, and Fernando. Simone, I agree, this is a fantastic topic with many nice photos. I like everyone's turtle's collections! Roger, haha, yes, the Papo tortoise looks like a mother of the others Yes, that Safari Ltd leatherback turtle is very nice but I think the two new models of this species (papo and collecta) have nicer paintwork. Lucky Luke, I think your collection of turtles is fantastic and I like the presentation very much! _________________ Anna Horse and Bird studio - Horse sculptures My model horse collection

Wow Andreas! Your army of Turtles in the first picture made me think of a cobblestone square. Bumpy, colourful and very slippery when wet!

They are wonderful, Andreas Especially the little ones, because there are such interesting species, but the large one is very charming

What wonderful collections everyone I didn't think there were this many species availble in model form! Two oldies: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Britains Giant Tortiose On the left the original issue introduced in 1961 and replaced in 1972 with the version on the right which was deleted in 1998. Both models were given the same number 1317. The 1961 model was moulded in brown plastic which had a swirly type finish and grey paint was applied to the underside, legs, neck and face. Black paint was also applied to the nails and to highlight the eyes. In around 1968 a PVC version was issued and this was in brown without the swirl finish. The new version, pictured right, was moulded in a bluely-grey PVC and brown paint was applied to the shell area. As can be seen from the shell outline the old and new versions appear to be different species or at least different sub-species. The old version has a distinct ‘saddle back’ shell whereas the new version is a dome shaped shell. The Giant Tortoise was first released in 1931 as part of Britains lead range of Zoo animals and the first plastic model is derived from this mould. And a newbie: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Papo Turtle 56005 4 A fabulous example from the Papo range of sea life animal figures. This model was photographed on the coast in Rhosneigr North Wales.

Chris, what a fabulous picture of the Papo sea turtle! Very realistic result! It is very interesting also that comparison of both Britains giant tortoises. I enjoy the fact that they decided to give them two distinct shell shapes. It is often not enough to distinguish species once both shapes can be found in populations of the same species. Giant tortoises are really hard to identify but it is nice that Britains released them in different shapes.
