| Have a look at these photos please, could it be a real frog? Recently my brother found this frog on a flea market in Frankfurt Germany. He thought it´s a toy animal and I could use it for my collection. The frog looks very realistic - To much realistic for a toy animal. No ordinary plastic. I have the suspicion that this frog has really lived in the past. Perhaps it´s a kind of preparation, as we can it in museums? What do you mean ? Weight is 450g Height: 8cm Length: 16cm. First together with plastic toy animals. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Different views [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] _________________ Yvette

| It's an interesting model. I think it's not prepared animal but a mould was taken from a real specimen and then it was cast in resin, plastic or something else (polystone?) Very nice paintwork too, but it's clearly a paint, not the real skin pigmentation. At least, that's what I think about it _________________ Anna Horse and Bird studio - Horse sculptures My model horse collection

Thank you Anna for your interesting comment. I agree with you. Some areas are looking like painted. For example, the points around the mouth. Other places are looking too realistic for a paintwork. For example, the region around the belly. It is not a resin. Maybe the frog was preserved in "liquid plastic" and also get some paintwork when he was "ready" ? So far, I have never had such a figure in my hand. _________________ Yvette

| It could be a lifelike and lifesize figur for school. One brand for example is 3D scientific |

| This sure looks like a very neat frog replica! I don't think it's a real specimen, but as Andreas suggested, it could be an educational model for schools or a museum. But it sure looks really nice! |

| It does look very real but I'm fairly certain it isn't. Close up you can tell it is both handpainted and perhaps some light airbrushing on the underside. I will have to agree with Ana that more than likely a real specimen was used to make the mould for this figure.
We can't forget that AAA used real specimens for some of their reptile figures. :) (And possibly other figures too?) |

| I am late to this conversation, but I was sent a PM so I thought I would chime in. I think it is a replica, but cast from an actual specimen. It might be a 3B scientific model, as previously suggested. |

| What a fantastic find! Would be a hyper if someone would find something like this for me I do not think it is a real frog, but indeed a very well made specimen for a museum. These amphibians and some small reptiles don't have to have an under plate/base. I have seen such Replica's in our Natural History Museum in Leeuwarden and some in a small museum I forgot the name of. I will see if I still can find the photos of them :) _________________ ~Karin~

| Many thanks to you all for your comments and assessments. So meanwhile I would also say, it´s not a real specimen - but more a 3B scientific model for school or museum. Karin, the photos are awesome. Exately what I was looking for. These models are absolutly similar to my frog. As Fallon said, with the knowledge of the STS community, the question is now solved to 99%. Many thanks! _________________ Yvette

| Oh, now that I want to start lifesized frog replicas, Susanne brings back this topic. It is absolutely impressive, I don't think a replica can be more realistic than this. What happened with this frog? Isn't it an American bullfrog or am I seeing American bullfrogs everywhere? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |
