| Britains Asian Elephant and Indian RhinocerosBritains Asian Elephant and Indian Rhinoceros by Chris Sweetman, on Flickr Both models were introduced to the Britains Zoo range in 1961. The Asian elephant, labelled by Britains as an Indian, was replaced in 1972. Whilst the Indian rhinoceros, also known as the Greater One Horned, remained in the Zoo/Wild Life range until Britains decided to withdraw that range in 1998. The elephant was numbered H1311 and the rhinoceros was H1314. In 1962 the H prefix was dropped. Both carry BRITAINS LTD ENGLAND as an identification mark. On the elephant this appears on the inside of the rear left leg and on the rhinoceros this appears on the underbelly. _________________ Chris |

Thank you Roger. Today after my walk and before the rains came I decided to shoot some animals amongst the 'elephant' grass in our garden. _________________ Chris |

I love that Indian Rhino ... my first Britains model ... a gift from Roger ( Portugal) :) Thank you Kosta - glad you like the photos. Agree regarding the Indian rhino. Just to note that the plastic version was derived from the lead model introduced in 1929! So almost 70 years production span albeit in different materials. _________________ Chris |

| These are great. If I remember, Britain never made a black or white rhino model, did they? _________________ Shawn

Thanks Shawn and they did make a Black rhino: Britains African Black Rhino charging 1 by Chris Sweetman, on Flickr This model was number 1320 in the Britains Wild Life line. It was Issued in 1979 and withdrawn in 1998. One of the last animal figures introduced in this famous range. Modelled by Ron Cameron the African Black Rhinoceros was made in PVC plastic. Mr Cameron suspended in miniature the classic pose of this animal charging with perfection. Marked on the belly area "BRITAINS LTD ENGLAND 1979. _________________ Chris |

| Britains made the best animal figures at 1:32 scale, these two Asian models are two good examples and even modern companies are having troubles to make them with a similar quality. Well, we now have a few good Asian rhinos and elephants but only just after many failed trials. The black rhino is also a fantastic model, I am happy that I have these in my collection and that Kosta is happy with the armoured twin. Your pictures are just the best but you already know it. |

Marked on the belly area "BRITAINS LTD ENGLAND 1979. Thanks Chris. I never saw him. I think in 1980 I was getting too "old" to collect them anymore but had a lot of the previous ones I collected int he 70s. And now look at me in my 50s collect brands! I was too young to know the difference between Asian and African species so I thought as a young kid that the Asian Elephant was the female and the African Elephant was the male-- bigger in size and tusks and the baby (the one with his trunk up) was their child! _________________ Shawn

Thanks Roger regarding your comments about the my photos but others on STS also produce excellent images of animal figures. Photographic styles may be different but any image greatly enhances the experience of the viewer. _________________ Chris |

You are welcome Shawn. My renewed interest in collecting Britains was when our daughter was young. I noticed how different the Britains animal poses were so started to investigate. When I was a kid I had the same idea as you did regarding the elephants when looking at them in the catalogue. I only had the baby elephant but longed for the complete 'family'. It was many years after I got them all and someone on STS said that the African sculpt was actually based an elephant cow living at London Zoo in the 1960's! I found the African rhino hard to locate but perseverance paid off in the end. _________________ Chris |
