In Germany  started last week in supermarket Edeka an action: buy for 10 Euros and get a Collecting-point: For five Collecting Points you can buy one of 20 Schleich items: In this year they have farm- world-animals:

Oh, right, it's that time of the year again, I got a bunch of Wild Life ones at Edeka last year, thanks for the heads up.

I suppose as a promotional item/freebie/giveaway or whatever it makes sense to product a batch of models using cheaper materials. Naturally the ones you buy in store would then be the more 'higher quality' product....
