| Hi! I'm looking for an excuse to get the Safari Ltd indian rhinoceros, but my collection is synoptic and I already have the Schleich's. Do you think it can be used as a javan? I have seen some comparison charts, but when it comes to pictures of real specimens, I cannot really tell the difference... | The Safari is humongous, much larger than the Schleich, it won't fit sizewise. _________________ Schleich 370 CollectA 76 Papo 61 Safari 24 Yujin 15 Southlands 12 Mojo 14 Maia&Borges 5 Bullyland 1 Recur 1 Homemade 3 Bootleg 1 Total 582

| The Safari Ltd is an Indian rhino, Javan rhino have smaller horn (not more than 30cm but usually 20cm) and the shoulder paddle shape is complete on Javan, it isn't on Safari Ltd. |

| Yes, I know it's an indian. It was explicitely (and implicitely) in the question. Thanks! |

| Christophe is right and the nape shield is the easiest way to tell one species from the other. There are other subtle differences like the neck folds or mouth but those are not easy to check. What [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is clearly pointing in this perfect comparison chart, is absolutely determing. After you get used with that identifying feature, you will surely find that it doesn't work to use Safari model as a Javan. Size is not a good excuse to determine these species and Safari's model is larger so it does not work at all. A very good excuse to get Safari's model is that it is an absolute masterpiece, a perfect rendition of an Indian rhinoceros, the best of them all and it is not a vain praise because Papo and Schleich models are also very good. It is not an expensive figure either. Bullyland released Javan rhinos as you surely know but they are hard to find, larger than the Indian rhinos I mentioned and clearly less realistic. CollectA never released an Asian rhino, if there is a brand we can expect a Javan instead of an Indian, it is CollectA and if CollectA releases it, it is almost for sure a very realistic model. I recomend that you visit [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] where we discuss a similar question. |

| Thank you Roger!
Yes, the shoulder thing that Christophe pointed is quite useful. But, again, it's not as obvious in real especimens as in figures... |

| It is obvious in real specimen, this is why it must be obvious on figures |

| OK, Christ-ophe.
I've been reading the topic that Roger linked. I think you all concluded that the Schleich CAN be used as Javan. So that's the excuse to get the Safari. |

I'd say we concluded both are Indian rhinos but, if you want to use one of them as a Javan while waiting for one, better to use the Schleich than the Safari. It doesn't mean the Schleich model is a Javan and it is not. Though, go for the Safari model, it is fantastic, you won't regret and when a Javan is available, you can choose one of these two for your Indian representative. About the real rhinos, they're not easy to identify but after knowing where to look at, it won't be difficult as long as you can see the nape shield. |

| Wonderful and impressive RHINOTEKA! I hope you can find the Bullyland models, they're quite rare and they're really made after Javan rhinos. Unfortunately this species is very rare as figure, we only have 4 listed on TAW and the Action Products is probably accidental. Welcome on forum! |

| Very nice Rhinotheque, I also like these adorable critters (I have a weakness for Indians and Javan) Red Elephant had produced a pair of Javan Rhinoceros a few years ago but I'm afraid they are nowhere to be found now. The old Hollowcast plastic Marx is not strictly speaking a Javan rhino but it has the characteristics, on the other hand is is quite difficult to find in good condition at an affordable price. |

| I love seeing a really comprehensive specialist collection like this, it takes real dedication to track down so many models of the same animal, or small family of related species. |
