The name "Megaloceros" is an umbrella-name for several species of giant deer.
The largest one is called Megaloceros giganteus.
They were indeed enormous deer ; the largest almost 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) at the withers , and the males had huge antlers.
Present day's fallow deer ar closely related to the giants.
I can never remember the scientific name, so for every day use I like their name "Giant deer" better
It is also called Irish elk , but it was not exclusive to Ireland. Rather, it was so named because the most well-known and best-preserved fossil specimens have been found in lake sediments and peat bogs in Ireland.
They became extinct app 7.700 years ago, but at a time they were roaming the area from what is now Ireland and through a great part Siberia.
There has even been found bones from Giant deer in Denmark !
In 2021 Eikoh made a fine little model, and I would like to present him here.
First some comparisons .
Starlux, Papo, Eikoh, Bullyland
With Starlux
With Bullylands model, which was my only Giant deer for several years
And the huge Papo model :
From different angles :
And some close-ups :
His majesty says farewell, and hopes to see you soon
Sorry for the many pictures ! I always get carried a bit away, when I start "shooting"
