| Here is the last Schleich I will buy this year. It is an expensive model but I can't resist to such an unusual specie. The crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) is a odent specie extant in mainland Italy, Sicily, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. The adult crested porcupine has an average head and body length of about 60 to 83 cm long, discounting the tail, and weighs from 13 to 27 kg. Almost the entire body is covered with bristles which are either dark brown or black and rather coarse. This mammal is recognizable by the quills that run along the head, nape, and back that can be raised into a crest. Hence the name crested porcupine. There are also some sturdier quills which are about 35 cm (14 in) in length and run along the sides and back half of the body. These sturdier quills are used, for the most part, for defense and are usually marked with light and dark bands which alternate; these are not firmly attached. This porcupine has a shorter tail which has rattle quills at the end. The rattle quills broaden at the terminal end and the broad portion is hollow with thin walls. When these quills are vibrated they produce a hiss-like rattle. The Crested porcupine is for the most part herbivorous, eating roots, bulbs, crops. But occasionally they do consume insects, small vertebrates and carrion. In order to ingest calcium and sharpen incisors they often gnaw on bones. These animals often travel long distances looking for food. The Schleich crested porcupine scale is between 1:10 and 1:15.

| Thank you Harriet I lost my white wall so I needed to find something else . It's a good model, despite the smiling face. It is very well made and a crested procupine have a VIP place on my shelves so I bought that far too expensive citizen. |

| Thanks Kiki! Another fantastic walk around review! I see you love this species, so certainly a fantastic addition for you! I believe it is a nice replica but it is the first year, until the end of production I hope to find another nice porcupine or even see Schleich introduce it in their regular range. I have time to wait, so it goes directly to my stand by list! |

| Wonderful pictures, Christophe What would we do without your famous walk-arounds ?? Expensive, - well, yes. But I like the boy also, especially his outfit. Perhaps you can use him as a christmas present to other childish persons, then it is not so expensive |

| Congratulations on acquiring this spectacular figurine(s), Christophe... I suppose that I will have to purchase these figurines for the sake of completeness, despite their high price. However, after viewing your fine photos, I think that this porcupine is a very poorly rendered version of the real thing. I've never seen one in real life, but I have multiple nature documentaries featuring this creature, especially the sub-Saharan variety, and I'm disappointed that Schleich couldn't have done a better job with it. Frankly, it's inferior to the AAA Porcupine, IMHO... |

I've not seen this figurine in person yet, and on these photos it doesn't look very realistic to me too... Although, we all know that Kiki's highly detailed photos are rather "cruel" to figurines ;0) _________________ Owners of miniature zoos on shelves, unite! My collector's blog

| Crested porcupine is a really common zoo citizen in Europa, especially because it is also a south European animal . IMHO, the SCHLEICH is a better Crested porcupine than the AAA because the AAA is not really a crested one. It has no crest. Also the Schleich's quill lines are perpendicular with the spine which is like the real one when it uses his quills. The pose is better too, it is a defending one. The tail of the AAA is without quills. The SCHLEICH one has got quills on the tail like in real life. I will not speak about the AAA colours . IMHO the AAA is a Malayan porcupine [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]And the SCHLEICH is a crested porcupine [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

| Christophe, I think you're quite correct about the identification of the species depicted by these figurines, but in comparison to the drawing you've provided, I still think the Schleich model is very poor. My opinion, of course, in tandem with $2, will get you a large house coffee at Starbucks... |

Cheers Phil, your opinion is always welcome
For the coffee at Starbuck, I would prefer drinking something better with your avatar "Bunny at the Wine Bar" says, "Come on over, Christophe, I'll buy you a bottle and a bunch of carrots!" However, judging by the label, he's not drinking Jeroboam Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 1945. Maybe he was put off by the 60K price... |
