| They are just great, Andreas Are there 6 different species of bat there ? ? I just love them all, but perhaps most those to the left, so many rare kinds of animals If ever you have time, I would love to se them more close-up. I am not sure I can see what they all are, -perhaps I do not even know them all, but I would very much like to learn about them Thankyou for sharing |

| My bad! I wrote civet instead of genet! I always mistake one for the other! |

Such a shame if it has become extinct It is very rare, but probably not extinct. They come from the deep forests in the Congo and where it comes from is so remote and in various stages of war that scientists rarely go there, along with that it is a very secretive animal and not common so there is little information on the animal. They still find them in native traps, that is how they know the color pattern and that there are still some in the forests where they live. As pointed out, the name is an aquatic genet, and many of the figures are mismarked, like Kiki mentioned, the binterong is a solid black color in life and is one of my favorite animals. They are large and come from forests where it rains quite frequently so they have a pair of oil glands that they rub all over the fur. While lots of animals have something similar, binterongs oil smells like fresh buttered popcorn. I had a pair several years ago and when they were in the house it smelled so good! |

It all depends on the species and the permits that an individual has. Binterongs are not that rare, and my binterongs were captive raised by a private breeder. I have had some animals that are very rare and others that are unusual in captivity but very common in the wild. There are many animals that are very rare but do not make good display animals and because of that zoo's don't keep or display them but they are in private collections and available to people who have the proper caging and permits. A great example of hobbyists keeping rare animals may surprise you. One of the rarest tropical fish in the world is a cherry barb. It is almost extinct in the wild, there are so few that on some surveys they don't even collect any from the native habitat, yet go to just about any pet store and they are for sale for under $2 and sometimes I see small ones for about $0.99 at the local pet store. A perfect example of an endangered animal that will always be kept in captivity but may well become extinct in the wild. The same thing is true for both species of white cloud mountain minnows. Both are restricted to single habitats in the wild but in pet stores you can go any day of the week and buy them for about a dollar here in the USA. These are just 2 examples from a very popular hobby, in the exotic pet trade there are just as many, for instance one of the most common pheasants in captivity, the Swinhoe's pheasant, is endangered, but it is so common in captivity that breeders sell them for $60 a pair. Just so you have something to compare that to is an ocellated turkey, which are fairly common in the wild and you can buy permits to hunt them, but are $3500 per pair. |

| This is very interestinfg for me to read.
In Denmark all sort of wildlife as pets is practically impossible.
It is almost impossible to get a permit, - even scientists and peolple who have worked in zoos can`t keep tame wild animals.
If the zoos have a surplus of some species and can`t find another zoo for the animals, they have to put them down. They are not allowed to sell to private persons, - not even if it is an ordinary rabbit !

| Kiki surprised my some time ago with the most of these civets and genets... And i found some of the dolphins in a big marine-animal parc around here, long time ago actually, they were keyhangers... By the way, i think, the animal Susanne liked so much, could be the ringtailed mongoose from Madagaskar to... Look at these pics on this site... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]But maybe it is the aquatic genet, that is the problem when there are wrong names under the model, i was sorting out a whole day, to find out more or less what they really were... |
