I would also call the Mustang's color bay roan.

Thanks Susanne Bay roan, I'll try and remember that - I have several English horse books I should get them out and study all the different colours. It is really VERY easy, if you just forget all the fancy names for various shades. All you need to know is that there are 3 basic colours : Black, bay and chestnut. The black is uniform black, Bay has black "points", chestnut does not have any immediately visible black. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]even if blacks tend to have a brownish sheen in most breeds. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]( Look, my little visitor has become FAT ) In USA they have names for various shades, but they are NOT neccesary. All those names a just confusing, and IMHO only for people with a special interest in names. The roans have white "woolen underwear", which shows mainly in spring, when they loose the long , stiff "overcoat, so the wool is very visible. I once wrote some article for the Danish Icelandic association about horse colours. here are some of the photoes that showed roan , - the horse is a young, black mare, called Gunlöd : This is Gunlöd in December and February. In December the black "overcoat" covers the white hair. Later in the winter you can see the white hair , as she begins to shed the winter coat. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]In spring her colour is most stunning : [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]As there is no wool in the face and on the lower part of the legs, they are black all the time. Thus, in a bay, the face is always bay . Here Gunlöd in summer, when she has short "raincoat" and short wool : [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]As most riding horses are kept warm all year round, they don`t have a heavy winter coat, and look like Gunlöd in summer most of the time.

| BTW, here is the collage showing the black roan Gunlöd as she changes colour during one year, - the chestnut is her mom [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Unlike greys, a roan will change colour the same way all her life, as the seasons change. |

| That is amazing Susanne, thank you so much for posting this - it's incredible and beautiful all the colours Gunlöd changed to in different seasons, she looks like a completely different horse in each photo! Your meadow visitors look so healthy now, it's fantastic _________________ Harriet My *Collection* My *Handmade Animal Sculpture*

| Yesterday was exciting, I had three parcels arrive, one from USA, another from Finland and one from Germany. The first parcel I opened was Germany, I couldn't wait and save it till last as I'd been waiting a couple of weeks for it. I won it on eBay for a fantastic bargain, the Lineol Eland!! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]It's so beautiful, I can't understand why only a couple people bid for it Can anyone tell me who sculpted this one? There are more photos on my blog *Here* Then I opened the parcel from USA, I did a trade with Kristie and she sent me this gorgeous Palm Civet - hurray for Kristie [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]And last but not least the packet from Finland, Emilia (Deseo) did a trade and she sent me the cutest Collecta Dachshund, he's so tiny, I love him! | Thankyou, Harriet Yes, isn`t it amazing how the skinny little horses changed to balloons, just like mine I will miss then terribly when they have to go home Gunlöds owner told that people kept asking her if she had got a new horse, - in Iceland a stallion of this colour is often called "Litfari", - travels with colour |

| Congratulations Harriet, eland, civet and dog are very nice! Of course the eland is in a different level for my taste. That's an extraordinary figure. curious that Lineol sometimes makes the antelopes even slender than they are in real but the result is quite artistic and pleasant although not enough atractive in modern concepts. I hope someday be a proud owner of a Lineol antelope! I want also to say thanks to Susanne explanation about horse colors, it was very interesting and very well done but I already forgot everything. I'll read again! |

I will NEVER understand why some sellers won`t send the cheapest way !!! Ok, so once in a very rare while a shipment may get list, but lets calculate : People waat to pay just so much, so if you are willing to send cheap, you get perhaps 10 Euros more. You earn 10 Euros more 55 times, - and then no 56 is lost ( or a buyer wants to cheat). Then you pay the money back, but the seller still made 550 more euros, and perhaps has to pay 15 in replacement |
