| From geese I moved on to ducks... (unless time is linear, that is, considering I made two of these months ago  ). [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The not-quite-right eider is made from the Collecta domestic duck. The two Schleichs portray extinct species, the pink-headed duck ( Rhodonessa caryophyllacea) and Labrador duck ( Camptorhynchus labradorius). The mallard female is really quite a versatile model, and the male isn't bad with a little tweaking. Of course I'm no anatologist*, so doubtless there are numerous differences I haven't yet learned to distinguish. * - which apparently isn't a word, but let's say I invented it. Anyway, a duck-studying type of person is what I'm going for. The little grey is a Falkland steamer duck ( Tachyeres brachypterus) for rather prosaic reasons: the wings are so damn short it was the only thing I could think of that didn't require resculpting! Although the model itself is pretty nice, the legs were rubbish and I couldn't fix them, so they had to go. _________________ Stuff you should be reading:

| Slightly better photos: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]I've developed a mild obsession with the Safari toob ibis... this is the fourth one I've painted. As you may notice, it isn't an ibis at all, but a whimbrel ( Numenius phaeopus). My original idea was to make it a curlew, but the proportions weren't quite right. They still aren't, but it'll do. Some brand needs to make good wading birds, stat! (I'm thinking Collecta, but Safari or M&B could certainly pull it off.)
