We call it a goose-vulture . Is a goose called a griffion in some language ??? Susanne, I think people already helped before but here goes my contribution. All these words have origin in latin, greek or both and griffon is not an exception. Then, in Middle French it turned in grifon and in middle English in griffoun. It means curled, curved or having a hooked nose. In Portugal we call grifo to the griffin but also to this specific vulture. Curiously, we also call grifo to a bristled chicken! I hope my googling was helpful. Now, I need to know why do you call goose vulture to this bird? Isn't a turkey vulture already enough for an aviary? My point... as everybody here A Griffon in French is used for a mythologic creature, a hunting dog or a small Belgian dog The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) or white headed vulture is called a vautour fauve, fauve is the French word for the latin fulvus which is the color of the vulture. French animal name are often latin names, for example a sable antelope (Hipottragus niger) is called Hippotrague noir. |

Yes, I know, I didn't say that you made a mistake. It was just strange to me because in our language Jastreb is a name for Goshawk Haha, also in Polish is similar, Jastrzab is a word for Goshawk _________________ Anna Horse and Bird studio - Horse sculptures My model horse collection

It was just strange to me because in our language Jastreb is a name for Goshawk May be it's because the Griffon Vulture (or White-headed "syp"/ "jastreb"/"flesh-eater"/etc.) as a species is a member of the Accipitrids family, which here in Bulgaria, probably in Serbia too, most commonly is associated with Hawks. I doubt it they would make a mistake at the zoo... Maria |

| Such a wonderful bird, great pose and detail. He's definitely going on my "to buy list". I saw a toy website called winner's circle that says he should be available around mid February. |
