PostSubject: The 2013 KAIYODO Japanese macaque walkaround   The 2013 KAIYODO Japanese macaque walkaround EmptySat Apr 13, 2013 4:03 pm

Known as the snow monkey, the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) is the most northerly occurring non-human primate. In general, macaques are strong-limbed, medium-sized monkeys with stout bodies. This species has long, dense fur which is brown to grey in colour. The thick fur contrasts with the naked skin of the face and rump, which is red in adult Japanese macaques. It has long whiskers, a beard and a relatively short tail. The male Japanese macaque is larger than the female.
In Japan, they are known as Nihonzaru (Nihon "Japan" + saru "monkey") to distinguish it from other primates, but Japanese macaque is very familiar monkey in Japan , so when Japanese people simply say Saru, they usually have in mind the Japanese macaque.
The Japanese macaque is diurnal, variably spending the daytime foraging, travelling, socially interacting and resting. It is an unfussy eater and its diet varies with habitat and season. Typically, it feeds on leaves, fruit, berries, seeds, small animals, insects and even fungi.
With its thick coat, the Japanese macaque can survive winter temperatures of -15 degrees Celsius. However, it is probably most well known for its habit of sitting in natural hot springs in order to escape the winter extremes. Japanese macaques are also thought to display ‘culture’, where a learned behaviour is passed through the troop. The most famous example of this is where a young female in a provisioned troop began washing potatoes and wheat in sea water. This behaviour was transmitted to other members of the troop and has since been passed on to subsequent generations.

KAIYODO made several Japanese macaques in the past. Nevertheless, the 2013 one is a very good addition IMHO.

We are always eager for new species but it is great to see all these Japanese troop. They look perfect together. Very Happy
I wished major brands gave us more macaques. The coming Mojo proboscis monkey is a good sign but they are poorly presented around. The excuse is that these animals are not appreciated by children and that most of them look scary. Of course I don't agree, I know many children that love macaques, although I found some rejection in some feminine public. But I may be wrong. Unless the feminine members of this forum surely love macaques... except our Kristie! Laughing flower
The topic is excelent as always and all these figures look really nice. monkey Very Happy

Thank you for your comments Very Happy

@ Anna: The macaque sitting on the left is not a Japanese one, it is a Formose macaque with a much longer tail Wink

@ Rogério: Monkeys are so colourful and have a lot of personality, I would love to see more species drunken
