Today I received some pastels and fixative for my birthday!

My Andalusian foal was selected to be the first victim as he had lots of scuffs Twisted Evil
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It took me quite awhile to build up the first layer of colour- I think the grey I was using at the beginning was to light
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Though in the next few steps, he ended up being a little too dark but hopefully I will learn how to refine this method more in the future-especially as this was my first pastel custom
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I didn't like him very much at all at first, however the unique coat colouring is rather charming (though I really need to work on painting eyes...he was terrifying for a long while Laughing )
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This is him just before his last coat of sealer and with his little acrylic hooves
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Overall I think this little project was a success considering that I had almost no idea what I was even aiming to do for a long while and it only took me a few hours, though I would love feedback and tips to help improve Very Happy

Have a happy new year sunny

You were good starting out with light grey pastels Wink You want to slowly build up layers, adding a small amount of darker pigment for each layer. If you add too much dark too fast, the finish starts to get grainy. Very Happy It's not uncommon to use 50+ layers on just one model.

I think he's very good for your first one! A few suggestions I would make are watch the hoof color - since the legs are all white (except for the front left, that one should be dark), the hooves should be a light shell color. I was planning on doing a tutorial for eyes, I keep forgetting to since I love panting eyes and just go through it Laughing It looks like the Schleich stamp is still on his belly? Perhaps your next one you might want to remove the stamp and do some prepping, it really makes the model look so much better. flower

I probably made it sound like he's not good, but really, you did an awesome job! Smile

I agree with LeeAnn. Thats a very good for your first pastel repaint. I think this unique color suits quite well for her :) will we see the mare tomorrow? I saw she was in the backround there Very Happy
When you paint eyes use the most small brush you have or get a couple of those. That makes it so much easier Wink overall your foal is adorable! I got bitten by a repainter bug again too xD

Thank you for the feedback and advice LeeAnn and Jonas Very Happy

I was originally going to take off the schleich markings, but I forgot until I started pastelling and was too lazy to start over Embarassed
And as for the hoof colour.. I was aware that they should be shell coloured but I decided to ignore that fact and paint what I thought would look best (especially as she was pretty much grey scale-black hooves made more sense to me) Also, I was simply too lazy to get all of my paints back out and try to mix a suitable colour Laughing
I'm sure myself and many others would certainly benefit if you made an eye painting tutorial Very Happy
Thank you for the tip on the layering too, I was actually trying to figure out why the finish was grainy in some areas! sunny

Jonas, you have a very good eye there! I was originally going to paint her as a buckskin or palomino but I might start over and pastel her too..hmm so many decisions bounce

Just a short update today:
On the weekend I customised a blank stablemate using my grey scale pastels Very Happy I'm definitely getting the hang of them now-just a little more practise needed cheers

Unfortunately I've had lots of school work and one of my dogs was hit by a car so I haven't been able to update this thread until now, though the dog had no serious injuries- the vet was so confused! I guess he's magical  scratch

These photos were taken in such horrible lighting, so you'll just have to imagine that the colours are beautiful Laughing It generally gets dark by the time I'm home from school so it would be a while if I waited for sunshine! bounce

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I ordered several packs of unpainted stablemates from UH (I'm addicted!) so I would imagine that many future updates will be about them Very Happy
Thank you for viewing and have a nice day sunny

That's a really nice color, Abby! I think you're better with acrylics already now! Shocked Love his light hoofs I love you
I'm glad that your dog is ok! Shocked And hey - I understand what you mean about the darkness that comes so early. You know Finland's winter Mad Very Happy

He's very pretty in grey! Very Happy

I just wanted to note - you don't have to buy unpainted models to customize them. You can just spray primer right over OF models and you're good to go. Wink

For about three weeks I have been using my new earth-toned pastels to customise a Breyer stablemate, he is not finished yet as it has taken me a while because of school commitments etc, but here are the results thus far! Smile

His first few layers were a subtle 'lemon yellow'

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Before long, he started to turn to a dark brownish colour
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Then today I started adding dark-points on his legs
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I really like how he has turned out so far and I hope I'll be able to finish him soon sunny

I was also inspired to start working on my Breyer Morgan foal-I think I will make her into a buckskin, though I'm still unsure.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Thank you for reading flower

It's funny you ask Jonas, I prepped the hanoverian mare you sent me a little while ago but never got round to actually started customising her!

Here she is after a few layers of grey pastels:

I hope I'll be able to finish her sometime soon Very Happy

I was also finally able to come close to finishing this little guy
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

He only needs his eyes to be painted then he's finished! I really like how he came out cheers
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

And since i'm currently on a two week Easter break from school, I thought I would give myself a break from revision and do some more customising cheers cheers
This classic scaled foal has become a little experiment of mine and I really like how she has come out so far Very Happy

Oops! I haven't updated this since April Laughing Embarassed

I haven't been doing much customising due to my exams (results come out next week, I'm very nervous!) and life in general, in fact I'm going on holiday tomorrow but I thought I would squeeze in a little update Very Happy

The Breyer Shetland pony now has eyes (excuse the dust Embarassed )
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I believe this was my first attempt at 'realistic' eyes (thank you LeeAnn for the tutorial!)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The Hanoverian Mare from Jonas is slowly gaining layers of pastel
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I've decided to re-customise this Schleich horse as I did not like how she was turning out, she's only had one layer of primer thus far though
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This is how she looked before I gave up on her and attacked her with gesso  Laughing
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This stallion (which I believe came from Jonas) has just started his journey of customisation
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Last but certainly not least, I have a very strange looking AAA horse Laughing
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

He will be my first wild animal custom cheers
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I really hope I will update this sooner rather than later as I have greatly missed this forum of wonderful people, bye-bye for now Very Happy

Oh it's been a very long time! Yesterday I gave myself a whole day to do some customising - it was great fun Very Happy

First up was the Andalusian mare who seems to have never ending layers of pastels! I was hoping to finish her but I ran out of fixative and my hand started to ache so she has quite a few layers to go still! Laughing  Laughing
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I then moved onto the bear which I had already primed. I started with some varying shades of acrylic paints then did a few layers of pastels (again I ran out of fixative Laughing ). This model also still has quite a bit of work to go, including fur details, face, mouth and feet shading etc. And excuse the bad photo - the lighting does no justice for his shading thus far! Laughing
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Then I moved onto one of the Andalusian foals which I own, the original paintwork was very scratched and so I saw I had no other choice but to make it another victim of customisation! Twisted Evil  Likewise lots of work needs to be done still though I really like how the base colours look so far!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Lastly is my favourite custom of the day, this Percheron is quite close to completion, just a few more darker layers and then eyes, hooves and mail/tail to be done! In hindsight I would've put a white sheet down behind him so you could see the shades of grey more easily  Razz
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I really wish I could've updated this thread earlier but I have been very busy with school, travelling and family life! study Though I must say I look forward to coming back to this website and I miss it dearly when I'm very busy! Crying or Very sad

As always, thank you for looking and any tips or improvements are welcome Very Happy

It is looking good so far.
Love the percheron :)
He is nicely greyed Very Happy
I really think you should make the mare and foal a bit darker on the legs maybe?
Ore will they have white socks?
Most horses have darker legs so if these horses have licht legs
it maybe will look funny at the end? I can be wrong afcorse :)

For the rest of this saying; keep up the good work :)

They look very good! I wish I could paint... I just realized I ordered two of the same horse, how cool would it be if I could just give one of them a diffeent color!

Your new repaints loook great already Very Happy
Are the Andalusian mare and foal going to get one of these rare pearl colours? (like horses from the Yeguada Paco Marti [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] )

Thank you for your comments everybody Very Happy I've done a couple more layers of pastel but haven't had the chance to take any more pictures yet.Razz

And I have never seen those pearl colours Anna! They are very beautiful - the colour reminds me of the Akhal Teke breed Very Happy

Here are some minor updates on some of the CM's mentioned above.

The Hanoverian Mare got more shading (which doesn't show too well) and glossed eyes and hooves.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Then here is the Percheron Stallion, he is much darker in real life and also has shading. I quite like how even his colour turned out - though I might darken his mane and tail as I think it needs to look a little more dirty. But overall I think I am improving quite a lot and cannot wait to finish the others Very Happy

I have also ordered some more pastels from my favourite brand so hopefully I will get chance to use them soon (and I'll try not to make another grey horse Laughing )
