University of Wyoming Geology Museum Empty
PostSubject: University of Wyoming Geology Museum   University of Wyoming Geology Museum EmptyMon Sep 05, 2022 8:21 am

Got to visit a Sister recently and she is near this wonderful place... there is just something about some universities' museums that speak to me and once I heard they housed Big Al (a proper dinosaur celebrity as far as I am concerned) the Allosaurus I was sold. He is featured at the end here, so as to get the respect that he deserves.

Anchiceratops ornatus

There was a side room with some mineral/rock collections. Only took a few shots before returning to the main hall. Carved "fossil book".

Then back to the main attractions.

Down a side hallway they have presented some casts of the fossils shown at Fossil Butte National Monument.

Then upstairs for a small (mostly) ocean themed section! (I love old prehistoric animal paintings, regardless of if they are accurate representations I feel that they are still part of the history of these animals and us)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Oxydactylus wyomingensis
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Tetrameryx sp.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And then the attraction. Big "Al"losaurus! Featured in BBC's Ballad of Big Al, he is remarkable for his completeness and his pathologies as a juvenile (19 different injuries and visible pathologies!). This poor guy/girl lived a rough life before dying young (potentially a smaller species, but generally considered to be a juvenile individual).

And then I found a child's sticker stuck to the floor... picked it up to help out the staff but then had a good laugh! A buck bronco and cowboy are the university's mascot.

Hey! You were at my university! It’s a wonderful museum and I wish people on campus appreciated it more. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you!

Endogenylove, what a small world! I have family in that town and my oldest niece will be attending the University soon. Its a great little museum and reminds me of my university I attended.

Species names added for the plaques that were fuzzy so you can tell what the animal is.  Very Happy

Astonishing !!! Shocked

Your pictures are so great, - it is almost like being there. Applause
I got so absorbed, I even felt myself retract from the screen, seeing some of the pictures of the allosaurus. Laughing
