Yeah, I'm not sure if Schleich just forgot to add the dorsal stripe for the first few years, or if they just randomly decided to change it???

but as you can see from the catalogs from 2001 - 2004, it only has the dorsal from 2004 onwards (but it still has the same model number so it's definitely meant to be the same model)

all of these lately were the models I grew up with. Mine are all beat up and scuffed but they hold all my memories as a kid. These photos bring some of that back for me.

Yeah, mine were played with a lot when I was younger too. Luckily I always tried to be careful with them, since they were my favourite toys as a kid and I didn’t want to break/damage them and I never let anyone else, like my younger nieces and cousins play with them because I knew they wouldn’t be as careful with them as me.
Some of mine do still have a couple of minor scapes and small pieces of paint missing though, but compared to some others I’ve seen I think they have survived pretty well XD (except for my 2007 pinto stallion who I unfortunately did drop at one point and broke off the very tip of his tail, but he’s the only one that’s actually been broken)

Up to 10 years ago, it was easy to find Schleich horse collectors who were committed to maintaining their collection as complete as possible. However, several reasons contributed to many people giving up from then on. These reasons include price increases, an excessive number of special editions, exclusive models only available in expensive sets, and also the slightly more childlike design of the models from this generation, which became known as the braided generation.
I'm glad to see that there are still resilient collectors like you who are building absolutely complete Schleich horse collections.
Congratulations on your collection, and it's very interesting to see the models individually.

I have to admit, I can understand why a lot of people stopped collecting them, specifically from 2016 onwards when the detail quality of the models started to drop.
I’m also not a fan of the newer Schleich and it does annoy me that schleich keep putting exclusive models in expensive childish/unrealistic sets (like the vet van for example really irritated me when it was first released. I usually just buy the horses from these sets second hand) but I didn’t want to stop collecting them myself since my collection was already so close to being complete.
I decided that since I’d gotten this far I might as well just keep going, otherwise it would have felt like a waste for me personally and it would have always felt incomplete. But I can’t blame others for wanting to stop.

I'm glad you decided to continue and to be fair, I think the last years have been better than those immediately after 2016. At least regarding those models which are sold outside of sets. I'm not a collector of horses and I bought the Sorraia, for instance. If 2016 was not a good year, 2006 was fantastic. Those Haflingers are probably the nicest of the brand and I remember the mare of that Andalusian being a very popular figure and it was probably the firrst with braids although quite different from the most recent braided ones.
I also love the Friesian stallion of that generation, the 2010 one, not so much the 2006 mare which were far nicer than the previous Maia & Borges model. The 2009 Hanoverian stallion is probably my favorite Schleich horse of ever despite its simplicity. A pity I got rid of a few of them because I needed to narrow my collection.

He's also the only model I've ever broken unfortunately (the very tip of his tail is missing but you can't tell from the picture).
Fun fact: I named Fred after a real life pony I used to take lessons on as a kid.
The real Fred was the first horse I ever truly bonded with
and to this day is the only other horse besides my own current pet horse Monty, that I have ever felt a connection/bond with
(which is significant because I took lessons on A LOT of different pony's/horse's over the years)

Some iconic Schleich horses. I believe the most popular among us is the wild horse. CollectA and Safari released more modern renditions but I think Schleich's is still the most popular.
The pose of the Knabstrupper colt is really cool, at a first glance it may look a prehistoric mammal. I like it so much.

The knabstrupper foal is posed like he's supposed to be nursing. It's very cute and i wish Schleich would make more horses with diverse poses like him and the 2005 Haflinger foal that's laying down.

I have gotten a bit behind with your updates, but I think Chloe is a really nice looking model. I also love the przewalksi horse, it is one of the only Schleich figures I have. The wagon sets are also really cool!

So nice to have Fred as a representation of an old friend! Sometimes those school ponies really make an impression. My "heart horse" was an old black gelding named Johnny Cash that I taught lessons rather than took lessons on, but I did not own him and he was sold. I still think about him often.
