I'm happy to see everybody's enthusiasm for the Boa; it's a great figure. Thank you, Christophe, Anna, Susanne, Ken, and Philip, for your comments!

I just saw this, Christophe. The square pics are filtered photographs using an iPhone App called "Instagram." The filters can really look nice, but I use those filtered photographs on this forum very rarely because the filters often alter the colors, tones, and textures of the animals. I've tried to use instagram pictures only where the appearance of the animal figure hasn't been affected significantly. (That seems to be the case with the Pheasant, Grass Lizard, and Boa pictures above, which are the only "instagram" pictures.)

PostSubject: Kaiyodo Peacock   Thu May 31, 2012 12:07 pm

I have to share a Kaiyodo "puzzle" figure that arrived a couple days ago -- a Peacock. I can't stop admiring it. The Peacock, and the Pheasant I posted pictures of earlier in this thread, are definitely my two favorite Kaiyodo figures to date. They are both just lovely.

Yes,would agree that Kaiyodo make many great models and with such detail.I have a small number including Stellers Sea Eagle,Masked Plam Civet,Leopard Cat,Raccoon Dog,Narwhal and Japanese Serow. The detail is fantastic and also very accurate for such small models. Its just a shame they havent extended their range to Europe as sure there would be many buyers!!

I've never seen that peacock before and how unusual to have it's tail down! It's beautiful, congratulations Scott!!

Andreas: Thank you!

Taylor: It really is a shame that Kaiyodo hasn't expanded their range of availability. I'd be buying them like a fiend if they were easily accessible in the U.S. As it is, finding them reasonably priced on eBay is a bit of a chore. They are often ridiculously overpriced.

Harriet: Thank you! I was struck by the pose as well. I actually like the Kaiyodo pose more than the standard Peacock pose with the tail fanned. I think that it's hard to capture the beauty of the fanned feathers in plastic. It ends up feeling heavy.

sauroid: Thank you! I agree: totally addictive.

Ken: Thank you so much!

Caiyodo birds look monumental! What a Face I believe no other brand is making them as nice as Caiyodo. Unless they look tremendous in pictures. Thanks for sharing this wonderful peacock with us and is nice to see how proud you feel owning it. Very Happy

Thank you very much Roger!! I might be biased, but I think they look as good in person as they do in pictures. I'm now looking into getting the Kaiyodo Kestrel. I've only seen pictures, but it looks very nice. (Harriet has a lovely [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].) I was just getting interested in the old retired Schleich birds of prey when I discovered the Kaiyodo ChocoQ series figures and I got entirely sidetracked. I would also love to get one of the two Kaiyodo Crows, but they seem to be very hard to find (and absurdly expensive when I do see them listed on eBay). (The forum member "Crow" posted some pictures of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].)

(Harriet and Crow, please let me know if you'd prefer that I not link your posts on these figures. I'd be happy to edit this comment.)

Both are great choices Scott, the kestrel is the more common and an absolute beauty Cool Your favorite KAIYODO crow seems awesome and less rare than the other one Wink

KAIYODO's prices are often outrageous on eBay now, but some models are like retired sCHLEICH, very rare and really sought after Suspect

Here is my Jungle Crow, not the best and expensive Laughing Laughing Laughing

There's one for sale on eBay right now, but it's priced at nearly $40. I've used that seller several times and think he's excellent, but despite that, I haven't reached the stage...not yet at least...where I'm comfortable shelling out that much. If I ever find a less costly alternative, I will definitely let you know.

PostSubject: Marbled Eel   Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:06 am

(Thank you Daria! I just saw your post.)

Here is another Kaiyodo ChocoQ animatales puzzle figure I acquired recently, the Marbled Eel. I've been fascinated by it for a while, in part because Eels freak me out. I love how it is painted to seem slick and wet. I think I need to use a different background to take good pictures of it (the wood surface is not ideal), but hopefully one can still get a reasonably adequate sense for the figure here.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I'm still on the look-out for the Crow and I think I may have a line on the King Cheetah, which I would be thrilled to have. I also recently saw a picture of the Doberman and it looked really nice... I am crazy for Kaiyodo.

Wow Scott, that eel looks so realistic! As you said, one can really get the slick and wet feeling from the painting.

I find eels extremely creepy though. But a very cool figure!

They really are, Steve! (in a league of their own) It's been such a pleasure collecting them. and thank you!

I agree completely Krista, extremely creepy. nightmarishly so. if there were an emoticon shuddering, I'd put it here. Instead, I'll just write 'brrrrhehehehhrrrreeeeblah!' (wait, is this a "shuddering" emoticon?: Mad ...I just don't know what that little dude is doing.)

Thank you Andreas. The lines are not so bad. But I'll take some better pictures and post them (but not today since it is so cloudy and rainy, it is completely dark). The figure is only three pieces total, so there are fewer lines. At many angles, they are very hard to see. It is one of the better models in that respect.

I'll have to ask my brother what kind of eel it was, they're sea creatures I think. One reason why I'll never go swimming in the sea, actually we have seen eels in the rivers and streams right near my house, but they're harmless to humans and very timid.

No it's true though, I'll have to ask my brother what kind of eel it was, they're sea water creatures though. One reason why I'll never go swimming in the sea, actually we have seen eels in the rivers and streams right near my house, but they're harmless to humans and very timid.

Just a quick mention - that Peacock is not Kaiyodo. It's by Furuta; part of their Funny Animals sets that they released basically in direct competition with Kaiyodo when Kaiyodo began collaborating with Takara. Initially Kaiyodo collaborated with Furuta on the Animatales (Chocoeggs) series, but around series 5 Furuta and Kaiyodo parted ways and Kaiyodo continued the Animatales (ChocoQ) figures with Takara. Furuta continued its Chocoeggs line with two series of "Funny Animals" or "Amazing Animals". The peacock pictured earlier is part of Furuta's series - Kaiyodo had nothing to do with it.

Fun Fact for today affraid cheers

That's really interesting. Thank you!

Isn't the Baboon (with Baby) and the Tasmanian Devil part of the "Funny/Amazing" animal series as well? (I think I have several others from that series: the Armadillo and Meerkat, for example.)

Is the King Cheetah an actual Kaiyodo?

Then there is the feared Amazonian catfish, the Candiru Asu. I would note that there is a much smaller version of this creature, as well.

Yes, both the Baboon and Tasmanian Devil are Furuta, and you are correct about the Armadillo and Meerkat from your collection both being from that series. The King Cheetah is Furuta as well. One of the easiest ways to tell which is which: All of Kaiyodo's figures were "Animals of Japan," whereas, Furuta's were global. So all of Kaiyodo's can be found in Japan - whether they are native to Japan or not didn't seem to matter. Some of the species Kaiyodo produced were introduced species, but they were all regarded as, and thus included as animals of Japan.

Furuta produces the Chocoeggs figures - from animals to planes and ships - Furuta is the producer of Chocoeggs, which are literally little chocolate egg candies. Kaiyodo worked with Furuta to produce the first 5 sets of Chocoeggs Animals of Japan (aka, Animatales). Kaiyodo and Furuta parted ways following the release of Chocoeggs Animals of Japan Series 5, and Kaiyodo teamed up with Takara. Kaiyodo/Takara continued the Animals of Japan series under Takara's ChocoQ lineup, starting with Series 6 and continuing through Series 11.

Meanwhile, jilted ex-partner Furuta produced Chocoeggs Funny Animals/Amazing Animals Series 6 and 7 to directly compete with the Kaiyodo/Takara ChocoQ Animatales.

Such drama and suspense for toy companies!

Oh - and none of these figures are "Puzzle" figures. FameMaster produces those. Kaiyodo, Takara, and Furuta produce Capsule figures. They come in pieces so that they can fit inside really small capsules and then be sold blind in a vending machine. They could never fit a fully built figure inside one of those capsules. But they most definitely are not puzzles (most even come with directions for assembling them, in case it wasn't obvious). And, it's been my experience that the figures that hit the market in the first few waves have the tightest joints, some so much so as to be barely visible. As the production runs continue, the joints and seams tend to become much more obvious. Just my two cents.
