White-lipped snail 2008 Safari Ltd Incredible Creatures

I really love this little guy - the Cepaea hortensis, a.k.a. white-lipped snail.

Cepaea hortensis, and its close relative, Cepaea nemoralis, are very common here and are probably the most colourful of all European land gastropods. In fact, they are notable for the polymorphism of their shells: specimens can have a yellow, pink, burgundy, orange, brown, or reddish shell, and a variable number of dark brown bands (several to none at all, thick or thin).

Here are some examples of their colourful shells: white-lipped and brown-lipped snails.

As it is often the case with land gastropods, they are hermaphrodites, meaning each individual has both male and female sex organs.

It's a Cepaea nemoralis! A brown-lipped snail. Cool!

It makes sense! Cepaea snails are European, while Euhadra amaliae is a Japanese species. A walkaround would be interesting, especially because real Euhadra amaliae has a "flatter" shell than Cepaea (whose shell is typically very roundish).
