| Great idea. I LOVE the bernese dogs, they are so beautiful in real life as well. _________________ -"I loathe people who keep dogs. | The eyes on the Schleich Bernese dogs freak me out. They're like big round spider eyes. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| The Dachshund's hind leg angulation disturbs me. Reminds me of this deformed fellow: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| That dog is interesting, Lea. I agree with you in regards to its hind legs, however, I am curious as to whether the dog is as poorly conformed in motion, or if it is merely the manner of stacking. Even some GSDs (good toplines/hips) can appear poorly conformed depending on the angulation of the stack. Obviously, the above dog has titled, which says something for its conformation.
As for the Dachshund figure, I must say I think generally overall the dog is not long enough in the body, and its legs/paws are oversized. This probably adds to the poor stance. Otherwise, it appears a lovely model.
But that is merely my opinion. |

| There are only a few other shots of the dog up, and none show him standing freely. In each photograph there is a marked difference, though, (to the other dogs of similar breed, pose and show placing that he is pictured with) in his ability to carry his haunches clear of his extended hind legs - be that because of functional problems or the sheer lacking length of his femurs. Even if he had a fully functionate hind end, the single-phalanx ground clearance he's been bred into makes him a particularly deformed example of a chondrodystrophic animal; such extreme dwarfism simply hinders the animal's ability to move, nevermind the other structural problems it comes with.
I find it a very naïve way of thinking to trust titles won, aside from working ones, to say anything (positive at least) about a dog's conformation, given the general state of the dog show world today, and especially when it's a dog of a small, "useless" companion breed known for (and judged on) its distinctly deformed body shape. Soundness or function admittedly aren't the qualities sought in most showring judging by far, nor are most dog show judges qualified to professionally assess those aspects even if they could give a damn. |

| Just thought I'd mention I dpn't base a dog on its titles. I guess its hard for me to explain what I mean, as I think in the same way, purebreds cop a lot about inbreeding etc, which is true. I suppose what I am saying is that I know dog breeders with sound dogs, titled and tested. One cannot really generalise either way, regarding purebreds or titles, or even crossbreds. |

You are absolutely right ! But for some breeds the standards have been taken much, much too literarily. Like some of those dachshounds, - they can't WALK. They almost move like seals And the Alsatians, that should be the picture of a "real" dog, - healthy and strong and easy moving, - the angles on the hind legs were bred so extreme that at some time they could not move naturally. But all that is due to bad judges rewarding the extreme, and not the healthy traits ! |

| Susanne - I completely agree! And thats a hard one. Sometimes the unfitness of single dogs may be due to inbreeding, genetic problems, or altered standards, as you say. I completely agree there - the GSD is one breed I would be very picky about owning or breeding, because of the hips and terrible topline. But then, I have met champion GSDs with free movement and form. The Irish Setter, too, differs in that way - yet given the right breeding, show specimins can be healthy. But yes, I inderstand your meaning, and know full well the consequences. Working in vet clinics, one does see the end of these dogs - Goldens with hip displasia, Gsds with mobility issues needing surgery, Cavaliers with heart murmours... Etc. But in the same space you see nom-registered breedrrs breeding dogs with deformities, health issues and more. Both can be irresponsible breeding. It really does depend on the breeder, and why they breed. I will become a breeder onedau, but registered, and for the bettering of a breed.
On another note, isnt that Husky Papo amazing? Finally, a brand makes them with their tail down, not up! To standard, Huslys do not have raised or curled taild. I think Schleich.made Malamutes! =P |
