| Lemurs are small primates known as "prosimians," which, roughly translated, means "pre-primates" or "before monkeys." Native only to the island of Madagascar and the neighboring Comoro Islands, lemurs resemble the oldest ancestors of primates which existed tens of millions of years ago. The word "lemur" derives from the word lemures (ghosts or spirits) from Roman mythology and was first used to describe a slender loris due to its nocturnalhabits and slow pace, but was later applied to the primates on Madagascar. There are five families of lemurs with about a dozen genera and just over 30 living species. Today's lemur species range in size from the tiny pygmy mouse lemur, weighing in at about an ounce, to the 15-pound indri lemur and the sifaka, which are both about the size of a standard house cat. The main groups of lemurs and other prosimians : Lemurs - native to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands: Avahi (Woolly Lemur), Aye-aye, Bamboo Lemur (Gentle Lemur), Black Lemur, Brown Lemur, Crowned Lemur, Fork-Marked Lemur, Indri, Mongoose Lemur, Mouse Lemur & Dwarf Lemur, Red-bellied Lemur, Ring-tailed Lemur, Ruffed Lemur, Sifaka, Sportive Lemur Other Prosimians :Loris: - Awantibo - native to Africa - Galago (Bushbaby) - native to Africa - Potto - native to Africa - Slender Loris - native to India - Slow Loris - native to Southeast Asia Tarsier - native to Southeast Asia Here is a small group of my ring-tailed lemurs. I love these funny animals [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Safari Ltd. | Andreas, your collection of species really dwarfs mine, it is more than evident here! You have a lot of different species, from extant animals, I can't think in a single one missing here that a toy is known. I think it was Sean who identified the Nayab tarsier as a kinkajou, I tend to agree with it although it is also acceptable as a tarsier. How a kinkajou if it is in a primates set? Easy explanation, it was until recently placed in Lemur genus. However, you don't have to remove it from the topic once it keeps somewhat ambiguous. |
