Insects (AAA) Empty
PostSubject: Insects (AAA)   Insects (AAA) EmptyTue Jan 01, 2019 4:50 pm

Review of a set of insects by AAA. I am surprised I have not reviewed this set previously! I am not sure all the ways AAA markets their figures, and some of these may be available individually, but I bought mine as a bagged set.

There are 10 figures, medium in size (I will put individual measurements below with each image). They are all stamped with the AAA logo and a common English name (one of which is incorrect, they are discussed individually below). Scientific names below are of my assigning.

AAA is popular with collectors so I thought I would highlight this set! Enjoy. In no particular order:

1. Longhorned beetle, Cerambyx cerdo. If you accept my Latin name here, it would be a unique species. Length = 6.8 cm (not including appendages)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

2. Ladybug. Length = 5.0 cm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

3. Weevil. This figure is incorrectly marked on the underside as a 'dung beetle'. Length = 6.5 cm (including snout)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

4. Hercules beetle, Dynastes hercules. This species is commonly made but this might be the only female! It is the only one I am familiar with. On the underside it is stamped 'rhinoceros beetle]. Length = 5.0 cm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

5. Rhinoceros beetle, Xylotrupes gideon. On the bottom stamped 'two horned beetle'. Length = 6.5 cm (including horns)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

6. Stage beetle. This is probably modeled after something specific, but I do not know what. Length = 8.0 cm (including mandibles)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

7. Grasshopper. Length = 8.0 cm (not including legs)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

8. Green darner, Anax junius. Simply marked 'dragonfly'. Length = 6.3 cm; wingspan = 9.3 cm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

9. Emperor scorpion, Pandinus imperator. Length = 10.0 cm (including claws, to the point at which the tail curls upwards)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

10. Cicada. Length = 6.2 cm (including wings)

They look actually nice! I like the female Hercules beetle, for any reason it looks more exotic when they show something not so exotic. Laughing
I will bookmark this topic and use your pictures at the wiki when possible. Very Happy

I wanted to put these pictures on TAI but first I need your help to confirm if the cicada, ladybug, longhorn beetle, rhinoceros beetle (Hercules) already listed in this link are the same as yours. Very Happy

They are so neat! It's sad however they identified a weevil as a dung beetle… they are so different!

Hi Blaine, it's aschuck, and I wanted to know, where did you purchase that set of AAA insects? Was it from Veghead? Or somewhere else? Just wondering, because today, I purchased a set of insects from veghead. There are 12 in the set, and they are 3 to 5 inches long. Could you tell me if these match up with -- oh, wait, I forgot, I have no pictures yet. Oh well, I'll show them to you all, when they arrive. They'll just have to go in the portrait box. Just in case you didn't know, the portrait box is a box in my collection where all the figures who await their pictures go until I can put them in my collection proper. Makes sense, doesn't it? Anyway, when I get my set of insects, I'll show them to you and the other members sometime. Okay? In the meantime, I'll keep posting if there's more news.

Thanks for all your help,

Aschuck

Yes, I bought them years ago from VegHead. I bought a couple sets from VegHead, maybe one of them had 12 figures. However, as far as I remember, the AAA set had only 10 (maybe I forgot a couple, I can't remember)
