V Mammals

2) Caniforms

e) Canids

1. Foxes

Species : Arctic fox, red fox, fennec fox
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Figures on this picture (from left to right) :
- Schleich 14638 Arctic Fox (2011-2016)
- Schleich 14805 Arctic Fox (2018-still in production)
- Schleich 14639 Arctic Fox Kit (2011-2016)
- Schleich 14649 Red Fox Kit (2011-2017)
- Schleich 14648 Red Fox (2011-2017)
- Papo 50229 Fennec fox (2017-still in production)

Fun facts :
- I have always preferred this red fox over the last Schleich model. The Papo running one is also a good rendition, I am considering it as a mate for mine.
- I prefer CollectA's fennec fox but the Papo model is much more compatible with my other foxes as far as size is concerned. I was also more easily available to me.
- In my opinion, the older Arctic fox is better shaped but the newer one has more accurate eyes.
- I bought the newer Arctic fox in my favourite Schleich shop, and the fennec fox in another local shop. I found the older Arctic fox, the red fox and their respective cubs during my figure hunts.
- I have seen red foxes in the wild and fennec and Arctic foxes in zoos.

I have all these figures except for the most recent Arctic fox. I already have too many red foxes and three arctic foxes do the job. I have two fennecs: Papo & CollectA, I may consider the Safari and Nayab but it's not priority.

Adam, can you confirm me the CollectA fennec is larger than the Papo ?

It's actually smaller, the CollectA looks like a juvenile next to the Papo

V Mammals

H) Carnivorans

2) Caniforms

e) Canids

2. Gray wolves

Species : Gray wolf
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Figures on this picture (from top to bottom and left to right) :
- Schleich 42472 Gray Wolf Mother with Cubs (2019-still in production)
- Schleich 14626 Wolf, Howling (2010-2015)
- Schleich 70431 Gregis with Wolf (2010-2013)
- Schleich 14605 Wolf (2009-2015)
- Schleich 14821 Gray Wolf (2019-still in production)
- Schleich 14606 Wolf Pup (2009-2015)
- Schleich 14741 Wolf (2015-2019)
- Schleich 14249 Wolf (2003-2009)

Fun facts :
- As I try to adapt the number of figures to the social behaviour of the species, I have never enough gray wolves ! That's why I have so many, all from Schleich since Papo's are bigger. If anyone has gray wolves from Safari or CollectA, I would be curious to see what size they are, even though my pack is now large enough and getting new grey wolves is not a priority.
- My favourite wolf is the howling one. It is, quite curiously, the only one who has male genitals. I wish I had more males in my group as wolf packs are usually mixed-sex.
- The wolf sold with Gregis from the Bayala Arelan series is supposed to be a repaint of the 14605 model. But the 14605 model looks definitely bulkier and heavier, I wonder if anyone else noticed that.
- The wolf mother from the set with cubs is a lazy repaint of the Arctic wolf. I mostly bought the set for the cubs and because there was a discount on it.
- As for many of us I guess, the wolf released last year was a huge disappointment as it looked much better on promo pics.
- I bought last year's model in my favourite Schleich shop and the previous one in another local shop. I got a discount on the mother + cubs set in a toy shop in my parents' town. I found the howling wolf and the cub in garden centres during my figure hunts. I found the Bayala set in a small independant toy shop two hours away from my hometown. I bought the 14605 and 14249 models to a collector from my region I met on a French second hand website.
- I have seen gray wolves in zoos.

Update :
- Safari 100509 Grey Wolf (2020-still in production) was added as the alpha male of the pack. For further information, please check the addition topics.

Thanks !

I think I will keep my Papo. The CollectA may look too imposing next to my other foxes. I understand why Pardo wants to get the Eikoh, it is perfectly sized and still nicely detailed.

The Gregis wolf does certainly look less bulky than its original predecessor. My pack is six strong and contains figures from Schleich and Papo. The Papo wolf walking may seem large but she works well as alpha female, with her smaller husband by Schleich. I thought about the set with the pups but decided against it as I couldn't get the pups separately.

Yes, now you can see why I want to substitute it, tough getting the Eikoh fennec is difficult or expensive. I also want to substitute my oversized Safari arctic fox by a Papo/Schleich one, but I'm still undecided about which one. Papo have a too big tail, but I like its face...

V Mammals

H) Carnivorans

2) Caniforms

e) Canids

3. Other canids

Species : Black-backed jackal, African wild dog, maned wolf, Arctic wolf
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Figures on this picture (from left to right)
- CollectA 88665 Black-Backed Jackal (2014-still in production)
- Mojo 387110 African Painted Dog (2012-still in production)
- CollectA 88595 Maned Wolf (2013-still in production)
- Schleich 14742 Arctic Wolf (2015-still in production)
- Schleich 14804 Arctic Wolf Puppy (2018-still in production)

Fun facts :
- The maned wolf was part of my second CollectA order. A very nice figure which confirmed me CollectA's skill.
- The African wild dog was part of my first Mojo order. It's an iconic species I definitely needed in my collection and a major gap in Schleich/Papo's range in my opinion. I hesitated between Mojo's and Safari's rendition and finally opted for Mojo's because I find it more appealing although I admit Safari's is more realistic-looking.
- I had the opportunity to get the Schleich black-backed jackal. But it was only slightly smaller than CollectA's and not as well-painted or sculpted. The pose was also more static. So I finally decided against it and ordered the CollectA model instead.
- Papo's golden jackal will surely complete this family meeting very soon. I am also seriously considering Southlands Replicas' dingo.
- I am really fond of Safari's Arctic wolf. I would love to see a comparison pic with the Schleich model. I also would like to know wether it's a male or a female. If it's a male, it would make a great mate for my Schleich female ! I may be interested even if it's another female, as long as they are compatible sizewise.
- The Arctic wolf and its pup were presents my parents bought in my favourite Schleich shop. My father first bought the Arctic fox (which I already had) so he had to change it for the wolf. The jackal, the maned wolf and the wild dog were ordered from my favourite Ebay seller.
- I have seen Arctic wolves, African wild dogs, maned wolves and golden jackals in zoos but I have never seen a black-backed jackal.

Update : Were added to the collection
- Safari 220029 White Wolf (2007-still in production)
- Papo 50259 Jackal (2020-still in production)
- Southlands Replicas 00011 Dingo Male (2017-still in production)

I can give a comparison tomorrow evening of the two Arcric wolves. My pack includes the Papo adult and baby, Schleich and baby and the Safari. The Papo is my alpha male as he is slightly larger than the two females.

So the Safari model is a female... That's a shame.

I use her as a female but there is nothing stopping you from making her a male as she is genderless.

When a figure is genderless, I consider it as a female since male genitals are more visible than female genitals (except when it's a species whose male genitals are tiny/not visible or when the animal is very furry and the fur can hide the genitals).

V Mammals

H) Carnivorans

2) Caniforms

f) Pinnipeds

1. Seals

Species : Harbour seal
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Figures on this picture (from left to right) :
- Schleich 14703 Seal Cub (2013-2018)
- Schleich 14702 Seal (2013-2018)
- Schleich 14801 Seal (2018-still in production)
- Schleich 14801 Seal (2018-still in production)

Fun facts :
- There is a debate about which species the 14702 adult and 14703 cub belong to. Indeed, the adult strongly looks like a harbour seal but the pup has a white fur harbour seal pups are not supposed to have. It led the TAI admins to identify both the pup and the adult as grey seals. But the adult's head shape definitely don't match a grey seal. So, it is quite obvious Schleich wanted to release a harbour seal but also wanted to match the general public's representation of seal pups which are widely believed to be white. I have to admit I did not know harbour seal pups were not white and I first bought this figure because I wanted to replace the old 14169 seal pup from 2000 I thought to be inaccurate because... it was not white ! Now, here is how I plan to fix that mistake made by Schleich. I am going to buy Safari's harp seal as a mother for my inaccurate Schleich harbour seal pup since harp seal pups are white. The adult will stay with the other harbour seals.
- I haven't decided yet which spotted seal I would get, CollectA's or Papo's. I think I'll end up buying the Papo because it is more easily available to me.
- I will also definitely get Mojo's grey seal.
- The white seal pup was a present from my mother she bought in my favourite toy shop. I got it to replace the old 14169 pup from 2000 as I did not know harbour seal babies were not white (I did not plan to replace the adult at that time). I then got the corresponding adult for free, as part of a sales offer because I bought several prehistoric mammal figures, and thus, finally replaced the vintage adult in my collection. I bought the new models recently, in a local toy shop.
- I have seen harbour seals in zoos and aquariums but never in the wild. However, I have seen grey seals in the wild several times.

Update : Were added to the collection
- Papo 56029 Seal (2017-still in production)
- Safari 248829 Harp Seal (2005-still in production)

I'm not trying to start this debate again but the two older Schleich figures are grey seals in my collection, and I'm getting the Mojo to complete the family as nearly all my seals are in families of three or soon to be.

When I visited my local toy shop on New Years Eve I picked up the most recent seal, but returned it soon after I realised it was a harbour seal, the shopkeeper wasn't happy but I did buy the most recent hippo for £7.99.

Why don't you want to have a harbour seal ?

The figures I have are the old Schleich adult and baby and the Bullyland

Indeed, especially as animal toys are also supposed to be biodiversity ambassadors and raise awareness about species' disappearance.
