I have seen California quail up close before. My grandparents live in Reno, Nevada. I have seen the quail pass through their back yard frequently. They also eat the seeds they leave out. They like to hide in the bushes, play in the bird baths. Once I caught a mom sheparding their chicks through. I chase them into the bushes. They're not very big fellows. Certainly cute though.
