| I have the honor of presenting the SUY July topic--Hippos! The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), or hippo, from the ancient Greek for "river horse" (ἱπποπόταμος), is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is the pygmy hippopotamus). After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago. The common ancestor of whales and hippos split from other even-toed ungulates around 60 million years ago. The earliest known hippopotamus fossils, belonging to the genus Kenyapotamus in Africa, date to around 16 million years ago. The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of 5 to 30 females and young. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grass. While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land. Hippos are recognizable by their barrel-shaped torso, enormous mouth and teeth, nearly hairless body, stubby legs and tremendous size. The hippopotamus is one of the largest quadrupeds and, despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun a human. Hippos have been clocked at 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Nevertheless, they are still threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth. (Source: Wikipedia)I wish I had action shots but the weather has not cooperated! | Here are our ancient Hippopotami, starting with composition and moving on to metal and plastic. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The Hippo on the left is by Pfeiffer of Vienna. Typically, it was made in two halves, front and back. Hausser, as usual, made their Elastolin Hippo (on the right) a little bigger than Pfeiffer's. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]In the 1930's, before war closed the factories to toy production, Hausser and Pfeiffer shared a sculptor, who produced several baby animals. This is the Hippo baby, with a Hausser parent. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Lineol's oldest Hippo is textured so that its skin looks hairy. That lower jaw is obviously loose ... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]... it was held in place by one very sharp nail and some glue! The baby, released in the 1930's, has skin textured like a snake. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Lineol's 1950's Hippo (with Schleich baby). His missing lower teeth have been replaced, otherwise he is in original condition. Like the earlier model, his lower jaw is a separate casting, fixed in place with glue. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Britains' old metal Hippo and baby (left) were based on pictures by a London Zoo photographer. The same moulds were used to clone their plastic Hippos (right) released in 1961 (adult) and 1962 (baby). [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]In 1978, Britains produced an open-mouthed plastic Hippo ... not one of their best models. (The older Hippo thinks that the new one is noisy and rude!) Sue & Lesley castlerigg |
