| I am getting completely behind WOW!! Those lipizzan horses in the snow Do you know that at the Lipizzan studs they always ( used to ?) have a bay stallion ? They thought that if not, the grey colour would be "too strong" and dilute the colours too much . The explanation of course is, that there used to be cream genes in the lipizzans, and when the horses went grey, it might be forgotten that it was borne buckskin or smoky black. If two of there were paired, the risk was 25 %, that you would get a Blue-eyed-cream, ei too much dilution. Funny to think of, it is not many years ago that most people thought that BECs were ill, and that this "illness" often was carried by greys . |

They thought that if not, the grey colour would be "too strong" and dilute the colours too much . The explanation of course is, that there used to be cream genes in the lipizzans, and when the horses went grey, it might be forgotten that it was borne buckskin or smoky black. I know that they always have a "lucky" dark bay (often mistaken for a black) at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The luck will abandon the stable when the last one leaves I did not know about the "too much dilution"-"grey to double cream"-"sick horse" theory nerdy part (skip if bored ): What always surprises me is that such "theories" sometimes turn out as actually containing some sence within them. Lipizzaners have a problem with skin cancer (melanoma) around the "under the tail" area (not necessarily malignant). - Quote :
- A melanoma is a dark-pigmented skin tumor. In human medical terminology, all melanomas are malignant. Among animals, however, melanomas may be either benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Most melanomas found in horses occur in those with gray coats, in which the coat turns gray (or white) with age. They are especially common in Lipizzaners, Arabians, and Percherons. It has been found that up to 80% of gray or white horses of these breeds may be affected.
The lighter the horse hairs - the bigger the risk (the skin is dark). Heterozygous Gg horses are a bit darker than homozygous GG horses, grey out a bit slower and are often fleabitten grays. Having a dark horse somehow makes sure that the "heterozygousness" is preserved within the population and thus makes the melanoma risk lower. So having a dark horse within the gray population is indeed lucky. Amazing. | I really enjoy your idea of making the foundation stallions for Lipizzans. That's an excelent project and it surely helped you to study more your beloved breed as well as making such wonderful works. Fortunately, I also have seen Susanne's Snowman, what a precious custom! |
