| What a beautiful diorama. The Starlux animals always have a special kind of magic. How big is the diorama? Are there different areas ? Can you change trees and other parts of the landscape ? _________________ Yvette

| ..in one of my children's bedroom Susanne!.. :)
Thank you too Andreas and Rogério! :)
Rogério, I am obliged to do my safaris inside now, because most of my shooting places are too far from home (a little more than one km!). |

| Great to see these photos and good to have nature at home when you can't go out to see it. I wondered: was Starlux the first company to produce prehistoric toy animals? |

Thanks. These companies were ahead of their times; especially dinosaurs have become much more popular since then. |

| Thank you Melekh! :)
The scimitar cat is given to be 1/32 scale and mastodons too, but they woul be bigger at this scale. I think they are rather actually 1/38 -1/40 scale.. |

Thank to you both Taos and Roger! :) I think the Italian Chialu also released series of dinosaurs during these years. |

Thank to you both Taos and Roger! :) I think the Italian Chialu also released series of dinosaurs during these years. Right after WWII , the Danish brand Neo-Form made 7 rather large dinosaurs in composition material. Back then they were already so expensive that they were mainly sold to schools in Germany and USA. As they were rather brittle, there are extremely few left, and they are probably the most expensive toy models at all now, and can go for large three-digit dollar prices. |

Something else to look for, Caracal Dinosaurs in composition material, that's very interesting. |

| ..of course Roger, but the price! As your question was about dinosaurs TOYS, my first answer was not so bad for Chialu produiced few (10?)very beautiful and sometimes unknown prehistoric animals for museum and school rather as toys for kids, like Neo-Form Suzanne is speaking about (I checked).. I think some brands produiced some prehistoric animals toys early, in the fiveties but very few pieces, less than ten (Cherilea, Marx, Elastolin). But Starlux, later in sixties, began a very big production of prehistoric animals and men (almost one hundred!) for, situated in an area with many painted cave and museums in Dordogne, the brand immediatly found issues to its production as gifts and, meeting success, as toys in toy shops of the whole France. I have the Starlux auroch that the sculptor of the brand, Mr Massat offered to the manager, Mr Beffara. He explained to him this auroch was directly inspired from "the big bull" of Lascaux cave!.. So, I think Starlux is the real precursory of all the modern brands that produice many dinosaurs, over all since the "Jurassic Parc" movie (Collecta, Schleich, Safari ltd, Papo..) but I reconize my mind is maybe not so objective since I played with Starlux dinosaurs during all my childhood (and I never broke the diplodocus so long and thin tail! )

| I like the fact that you put the production of prehistorical animal toys in a historical context. You are right, children (and their parents) need to be interested in them, otherwise it doesn't make sense for a company to produce them. It's very interesting that you say that Starlux produced them because people wanted to buy them in France, due to the cave paintings. It was commercially probably not so attractive for companies outside France to produce a complete series of prehistoric animals. And I hadn't thought of it, but later Jurassic Park indeed made dinosaurs hugely popular. |
