| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Andrewsarchus mongoliensis in what is nowadays, chinese Mongolia, 40 millions years BP. (from Starlux) This is a very interesting figurine for it represents a hugue animal which was during a long time considered as a carnivorous Mesonichid, a carnivorous ongulate! But according recent studies, it woul be rather an omnivore artiodactyl "Cetadontamorpha" (teeth looking cetaceous? Spacelab help! ) close to Entelodonts, hippopotamus and cetaceans.. Anyway, it was an ongulate eating meat!.. This figurine seems directly inspired by the well known picture from Zdenec Burian: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]..which inspired also most of more recent brands like Safari ltd: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]This bigger Safari version shows better its hooves: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]and now with a Marx cave man for size comparison: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

| I showed the Andrewsarchus to my brother, as I thought he may like it. He did but decided to get CollectA's arsinotherium. _________________ [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ADAM [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] "Our planet is in crisis. | It is such a great model !!! And your model has an extremely nice paintwork !!! As Andreas says, Starlux was in a class of its own, especially on the prehistoric models ! |

| Andrewsarchus are one of the most interesting and misterious prehistoric mammals. I love all of them, including the Starlux, it may explains why I don't have a single one. Again a fantastic setting and interesting information. |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Starlux Eohippus in tropical forest of what is now North America, 40 millions years BP. They are now called "hyracotherium", name scientificaly wrong but that had been given before Eohippus. This animal is suposed to have been at the origin of the horses but unlike these latters, they lived in forests and eated leaves. If you have keen eyes, you can see they have four fingers ended by little hooves. But they actually had only three on back legs. We will forgive Mr Massat, the Starlux sculptor this little flaw for he provided a wonderful prehistoric mammals range to us at a moment they were so scarcely produiced!

| Outstanding, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]! We forgive surely Mr. Massat. We are seeing now figures that are more accurate than ever and a similar mistake was made by CollectA with the indricotherium, not talking also about the donkey foals or Grevy's zebra. We have Papo using a striped hyena mould for a spotted hyena, as Starlux did with the Malayan tapir over a Brazilian tapir. We survived with Schleich ostriches with wrong number of claws, crocodiles with more toes than it is supposed, etc., etc. Do we also forgive you for killing us with these pictures? |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]In the same areas where hyracotherium lived, could be met "Gastornis". These giant and terrestrial birds, once called "Dyatrima" and supposed to have been ferocious predators, are now considered rather as omnivor giant chickens since whole beak and feet have been found that confirm they couldn't catch preys with their fingers and tear meat with their enormous straight beak, rather able to break giant nuts! yet from Starlux!.. and yet interesting for they testify to knowledge of the sixties about these birds, and so, are of good epistemological value!

| thank you Andreas and Benjamin. These birds are called now "Gastornis" because they were first described by a french paleontolog whose little name was "Gaston", so, this scientific name means; "the bird of Gaston"!.. :) |

Oh, this is a bit hard. I guess you mean Cetancodontamorpha. It's definitely 3 words, the first one is a huge fish or aquatic mammal (usually a whale but rarer can be used even for a hippo), the third is for shape. The middle word, has to be Greek, sounds very much like the the word we have for the tooth / teeth. (donti / dontia). So I guess it's something like teeth-cetacea. (a whale or hippo with teeth) I |
