| I always adored those gastornis-models from Starlux , and in the right environment they are even more beautyful |

| Besides the wonderful sceneries, I always learn a lot with you. Now I know a giant rooster is called Gaston and its wife is called Dyatrima. Have I got it or am I just a giant nuts? I will try it better next time with the phorusracid. |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Same epoch and continent with Uintatherium (from Starlux!) ready to fight for territory or females.. The scientific name means "Big animal from Uinta mountains". It belongs to an ongulate family not yet well classified. Males present 3 pairs of "horns" and hugue canines but they had almost no incisives and probably used tongue to get leaves and fruits they need. the size was the same as a rhino one but the brain was very small.. |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Paleotherium (=ancian beast) from Starlux This figurine is interesting because it is a good illustration of what was thought about paleotherium until these last years. It was regarded as a kind of tapir but we know now it had no trump and was rather looking a like-horse animal with 3 ended fingers thick legs. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.](from Mauricio Anton in "Mammifères de la préhistoire" éd. Nathan) At this so far epoch, tapirs had yet no trump, horses no long legs and rhino no horns but they all had 3 fingers!.. so, it was difficult to classifie them and that's probably the explanation of Geoges Cuvier's mistake. I have to add that he was the first paleontologist to describe this animal during the 18th century and so, had not the possibility to compare it with the numerous fossiles found after him .. But remains of true disapeared tapirs have been found in North America, later, from early Miocen epoch, and called "Miotapirus". So, I suggest you to follow these figurines to "Mio-scenes" thread, where they will play the role of Miotapirus! :)

| Very interesting and beautiful! Here is a prehistoric Starlux that I may someday add to my collection. It has a lot to tell as you mentioned. It also has colors reminescent of tapir babies what is very intringuing. |

| ..yes indeed.. As all the cubs of the 5 species of tapir are striped, maybe Mr Massat, probably following illustrators, thought it was the ancestral pattern!.. |

| I must admit I admire the attention to painting detail many of these vintage figures display, compared to their modern Chinese counterparts. |

Exactly! It is very intringuing that all tapir cubs are striped and not a single species preserves this pattern on adults. Surely it is inherited from a common ancestor. Even if it is known paleotherium is not an ancestor, being traditionally reconstructed as a tapir, it was a clever decision from Mr. Massat. Copying the colours of the adult of the extant American tapirs, could result in a boring and identityless figure. |

| One can feel the tension! Everything looks so real and it is obvious that you have too much joy doing it and that's probably the most important. |
