I just got the set of PV Crabs and saw this:[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It is just marked “Fiddler Crab”!
If you have an example that actually has the word “Mexican”, please post a photo below! I have never seen an actual photo of this crab with the word “Mexican”. Are there two variants?

I'll try to do it tonight or this weekend.

Speaking of Mexican crabs, one must consider the PV spider crab as Libinia mexicana or Maiopsis panamensis. I think we all assumed it was Macrocheir haempferi because that species is commonly made by Japanese company. However, Play Visions liked to base their figures on books at the time and almost all the other species in the set are from the West Coast of North America, from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico. it makes sense it would represent an American species. They probably used a book on American/Mexican crabs (or similar) for their inspiration.

Excellent theory! I noticed, too, that most of the crabs in this set are from the Pacific coast of the North America. It’s entirely possible that the spider crab represents a North American species instead of the larger and more famous Japanese Spider Crab.

Sorry for the delay, I forgot until this morning. Here you go. In the meantime I am changing the spider crab to Libinia mexicana in my collection study

Interesting! Since the figures otherwise look identical, I will use these IDs anyway.
