| Susanne, this topic is for you. Here are some pics of the new platypus made in PAPO. The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. The bizarre appearance of this egg-laying, venomous, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate fraud. It is one of the few venomous mammals, the male platypus having a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans. The unique features of the platypus make it an important subject in the study of evolutionary biology. Weight varies considerably from 0.7 to 2.4 kg (1.5 to 5.3 lb), with males being larger than females: males average 50 cm (20 in) in total length while females average 43 cm (17 in). There is substantial variation in average size from one region to another, and this pattern does not seem to follow any particular climatic rule. The platypus has an average body temperature of about 32 °C (90 °F) rather than the 37 °C (99 °F) typical of placental mammals. Research suggests this has been a gradual adaptation to harsh environmental conditions on the part of the small number of surviving monotreme species rather than a historical characteristic of monotremes. The swimming platypus produced by PAPO is 1:5 scale. I apologize, the pics are not the best I ever did but I hope you will enjoy

| Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, Christophe It is a really, really beautyfil duckbill, it looks almost alive Perhaps it was copied from Nature, Roger ? Also thankyou for the description. I had forgotten that it has this poisonous nail, and I did not know about the variation in size and the temperature I once read that during World War II Churchill decided to introduce a duckbill to the British People, and had one sent from Australia to go to some zoo in England. Experienced Zoologists were involved, and the little guy actually made it by boat all the way halfway round the world, in spite of mines and submarines and bombardments. But when the coast of England was already in sight, a storm rose, and the poor duckbill got stressed and died |

that's so sad Susanne poor little thing. Yes ! What a stupid idea I think that at that time the ruling opinion was that "There is plenty where it came from", and that animals can neither think nor feel |

| Suzanne, you are so spoiled by Kiki! You asked and you recieved! Another thing I remembered hearing about the Platypus is not only do have fur, webbed feet, duck bill, lay eggs.....but they nurse their young! How a duck bill nurses I do not know..... Thank you for doing the walkaround Kiki, great photos! I learned something new...I didn't know about the poisonous tip. ~ Sue |
