I think I have to start a new collection containing only Ana's work! I have the Norwegian Fjord Horse and have just ordered the gaur and the Arab mare. The Texas longhorn bull and Orlov Trotter horse are on my wishlist. Which other available sculpts are Ana's?

| Thanks for the list Anna. The Simmental cow reminds me of the old norwegian Telemark cattle but the Simmental is bigger. When I was a child, Telemark cattle was a common breed in Norway. Now it is only few animals left. It gives not enough profability. |

As CC says : this cow is the beautyful, graceful type that Simmentals were before the world went crazy
With the three new bos, Mojo's farm range gets a HUGE leap up in quality what is happened in the cattle world? Many original forms of breeds are being "improved" to make them more profitable. In the case of the Simmental, it is more common, at least where I live, to see a solid black form. The Simmental was originally a dual purpose breed, intended for beef and dairy, but the "new" breed is raised purely as a beef animal. The horns have also been bred out because, as neat as they look, they can be a safety hazzard. The few Simmental we have raised at my Grandpa's have been solid black animals that are naturally polled (no horns) and if you did not have papers on them, you would think that they were black angus. |

| Black simmental??? here they do here in the area a lot of breeding with simmental/ hf, than you get a black (ore grey) cow with a white head, you get stonger cow, but you can't call them simmental, they are cross breeds. And to get good cross breeds you need good 100% original breeds I think
By the way the cows on my photos are crossbreeds Holstein/ mry |

By the way the cows on my photos are crossbreeds Holstein/ mry I don't feel that they qualify as Simmental either, but apparently they are recognized as a pure breed. I copied this from Wikipedia. Not sure how accurate it is, but I've read the same thing in other places as well. Today, about 80% of the Simmental cattle in the United States are black, with the remaining 20% being red. Most Simmental cattle are solid in coloring. From the late 60s to the 80s traditionally colored (spotted red and white) Simmental were deemed most desirable by Simmental breeders, as well as the industry. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, due to market premiums in the US, there was a strong push to produce Simmental that were black and solid in color pattern. Fortunately for the breed, given that these characteristics are controlled by single genes, the evolution was relatively rapid and straightforward. The bulk of the change was brought about through the use of purebred Simmental sires that carried genes for black and solid color. These sires were the result of a portion of Simmental breeders selecting for these genes in the "breeding up" process during the 70's and 80's. Today, Simmental cattle in North America are commonly homozygous for black and solid color genes, as well as being homozygous for the polled gene. Interesting breed combo in your photos. MRY stands for Meuse Rhine Yssel right? |

| I think that the USA simmental must have angus in theyr blood what gives them the black collor and dissapear theyr horns, indeed it is quite simple to breed black and hornless.
here in europe the original simmental/vleckvieh look the same as the mojo simmental cow, original brown white with a white head.
you are right the normal red and white mrij cows come original from the rivers of Netherlands, and West Germany where they are called rottbunt doppelnutzung |

Just shows how messed up we can be over here. Anyway, I didn't mean to turn this thread into a cattle breed discussion topic (although one would be welcome ) The bottom line is, great figure Ana and mojo, it looks fantastic, and it's accuracy is greatly appreciated. |

I use photos and some drawings about anatomy, I don't sculpt them from life. But I'm quite often on the farm so I can look a bit closer too. However I haven't seen Simmental cattle in the neighbourhood, not mentioning Texas Longhorn->this would really surprise me here!! I have seen however some cows which I assume must have been Dutch Belted cattle, very cool tapir colours they have _________________ Anna Horse and Bird studio - Horse sculptures My model horse collection

I have seen however some cows which I assume must have been Dutch Belted cattle, very cool tapir colours they have We call them Oreo cows. Haha! Oreo cows! As a little kid, I was always ever so proud to recognize and know the name of this this breed of cows. Here we call them "Lakenvelder". And "Laken" means blanket. So they were easy to spot, even for me as a little kid, because it did look like someone just threw a white blanket on a cow's back. _________________ Simone |
