I'm not horse expert and don't what colors have Orlov Trotters exactly, but we had the same idea with you: I «can see» him in some variations of grey one

Anyway, if Orlov Trotters haven't bay color, you can mark it as exclusive

Yes, I already have googled about the color. They can be: white, black, red, bay and rarely braun (did Google Translate did its job correct with the last color?), I heard this color is called dark bay also.

I think the colour brown is sometimes called also seal brown. Dark bay is actually just a dark version of bay, can be almost the same shade but brown horses always have lighter brown markings on muzzle and flanks area, sometimes also on the girth area.

In this autumn I have visited Equiros (Equiros is an international horse show in Russia), and there were Ukrainian breed. This mare has a brown color as your first picture, but on her stable was note, where was saying that she is dark bay Well, maybe organizers were not correct, I also saw some horse marked as «black» color, while in Russia such color calls «raven», and only «raven».

Yes, I think it's not a big mistake to call brown horse a dark bay, they appear very similar, only small details are different. However studies have shown that genetically these colours are different.

You can see that seal brown is caused by a different version of gene A (At)

Well, I think, international show must comply with the standards. Plus Equiros is very popular and big organisation, which own many-many of thoroughbred horses...

I can definitely see him in a mealy bay or a light grey - even chestnut going grey with star dapples Or chestnut pinto!

It is incredible how sophisticated the horses world could be!!!! astonished!!!

Sometimes the shows or even official institutions are not very precise when it comes to equine colours. For example in Poland if you have a buckskin horse and you want to make a passport for this horse it will be registered as dun without the dorsal stripe because the Polish name for buckskin colour is not yet officially accepted. While it is known that dun and buckskin are caused by different genes and should have distinct names also in official documents.

Names of horse colors are official in my country (white — «grey», black — «raven»). Maybe they did it for foreigners? For easy translating?

I have put a primer on the first copy but cannot really decide which colour will be best. Please help me to decide

But I like dark grey at all, so I think Snegir will look wonderful with that color

Are you going to paint copies with all of those three color?
If yes, I think you should follow your list: 1 — dark grey, 2 — grey with depigmentation, 3 — bay.
I also liked the second color, but I like dark grey too much

Today I painted first copy of this model. And it was first time I painted this shade of dark grey, I wanted to try this colour since some time.
I think colour suits him quite nicely and thank you again for help with choosing the colour!  
I admit I worked a bit faster than usual, being very excited to see him in this colour and to see him painted for the first time. That resulted in a bit thicker paint layers, I think in future I will try to paint thinner.
