I think Britains realised that many children would prefer to have separate chickens, so they made them in such a way that it was easy to do. The earlier chickens had two separate legs; later they became attached. I see you have both versions. The fatter chickens in your last two chicken photos are from the last new moulds that Britains made (in 2013). They replaced the leaner chickens, I don't know why.

Yes, the design of those bases with the separate little tuft of grass in between looks like it was made specially to have weak spots for snapping if you wanted a more free-range flock! _________________

Honestly the best base design, where you can separate them if desired, rather than breaking off legs like I did with my attached chickens and geese. Lovely poultry collection! Those tiny ducklings are wonderful.

How do the new chickens compare size wise with the old ones? Are they a lot bigger? Perhaps the mould wore out so had to re-sculpt.

The new chickens are slightly larger, but not so much I would think that's the reason. I wonder whether the reason is that the new chickens were made in China whereas the old chickens were made in Britain.

Thank you all and would agree with Roger in regards to the newer chickens being made in China and the older ones in the UK.

they are wonderful and I think they look great separated! they can be posed at different angles instead of just in a line. I've never separated any of mine ones
