| Ankylosaurus existed between 66.5 to 65.5 million years ago, at the end of the Late Cretaceous Period, and was among the last dinosaur species that appeared before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. It is often considered the archetypal armored dinosaur. Other ankylosaurids shared its well-known features—the heavily-armored body and massive bony tail club—but Ankylosaurus was the largest known member of the family, estimated at lengths of 8 to 9 m and weighting up to 6 tones. Ankylosaurus was herbivorous, with small, leaf-shaped teeth suitable for cropping vegetation. These teeth were smaller, relative to the body size, than in any other ankylosaurid species. Ankylosaurus did not share the grinding tooth batteries of the contemporaneous ceratopsid and hadrosaurid dinosaurs, indicating that very little chewing occurred. The most obvious feature is the armor, consisting of massive knobs and plates of bone, known as osteoderms or scutes, embedded in the skin. Osteoderms are also found in the skin of crocodiles, armadillos and some lizards.Compared to the slightly more ancient ankylosaurid Euoplocephalus, the plates of Ankylosaurus were smooth in texture, without the high keels found on the armor of the contemporaneous Edmontonia. The famous tail club of Ankylosaurus was also composed of several large osteoderms, which were fused to the last few tail vertebrae. It was heavy and supported by the last seven tail vertebrae, which interlocked to form a stiff rod at the base of the club.
Most companies have made an ankylosaurid, even calling it ankylosaurus but it is often another specie. SCHLEICH made two false saichanias, Toyway made a "very special" ankylosaurid, PAPO and KINTO FAVORITE made Euoplocephalus tutus. The only "true" ankylosaurus toy was made buy SAFARI Ltd until… 2013. This year, KINTO FAVORITE is producing a new dino serie and there is an ankylosaurus. like all the new models of the line, it is made by the talented Japanese sculptor Araki Kazunari. The scale is between 1:43 and 1:48

| Great model christophe! The Kinto dinosaurs impress me; and I don't collect dinosaurs. (Except I must eventually get one or more of those gigantic Brachiosauruses. They are too fantastic.) |

| Thank you Scott The brachiosaurus is a very good choice if you want only one dinosaur. The PAPO is the most impressive but IMHO the 2011 SAFARI Ltd is far more elegant and realistic |

| Very interesting Christophe! Some years ago it was natural to give gneric names to animal figures, we can find it even in vintage brands. How many antelopes you know named only antelopes or monkeys named only monkeys? Rarely we find a baboon whose species is identified by the brand and much more examples can be found. Being ankylosaurus the best known member it is not a surprise that other ankylosaurs adopte his name. Not correct indeed and fortunately, brands are being more careful with the way figures are named. Very nice pictures, thanks! |
